Latest July Chicago Ratings

WRME tied for 10th. Not too shabby!

Not sure what caused the drop last book for WVAZ and the gain this book.

Despite David's Discouraging Demographic Dismissal, WRME-LP is responding to a definite format need, and is taking away some of the ratings from other stations. I wish we knew how WJMK 1250 is doing in Saginaw, now that their FM translator on 99.3 is on the air, and the Old Hippie FM Snobs no longer have an excuse not to listen. The translator has a pretty good signal. The AM/FM translator model could work in a lot of markets. They should fine tune it with Michigan Regional Garage Band hits from the era. Although the NC6 and the Shames WERE PLAYED and PROMOTED in SE Michigan, there were many MORE local artists.

I listen to it all the time, despite it's poor reception in many places out here in the western and NW suburbs. Especially Yacht Rock Saturday nights while I am delivering for the 2nd job.

There's no question that it fills a need, but the issue remains how to pay for it. Fortunately the station is owned by a company that uses the radio station to promote its TV station. Similar to the way Disney used its radio stations to promote its parks and movies. The money has to come from someplace, and most advertisers aren't supportive to this format. Radio would be very different if the only issue was filling format needs.

Like all Franken-FMs, I'd assume that WRME exists only so long as the loophole in FCC regulations that allows such pseudo-radio stations to stay on the air isn't closed, effectively legislating that portion of ownership's business model out of business. Correct? And are there any whispers from the Friendly Candy Company of an impending policy change?

So many people complaining about the Drive in the Feder comments section despite its dominating performance as of late.

Kind of says a lot about Internet comments don't they? Clearly the Drive is doing something right otherwise they wouldn't be #1. They have pulled off what The Loop could have only dreamed of for the last 10-15 years. The Drive, for better or worse, has become Chicago's heritage rock station.

As much as I personally wish they'd move the playlist past 1990 like now-sister station KSHE in St. Louis, I totally get why Hubbard hasn't had The Drive move into 1991 and beyond yet. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is as useful of an analogy as any, even in today's world.

Interesting of its long history that The Drive has never hit the number 1 Monday thru Sunday. Through not a surprise at all that the Mix;s morning show is #1 for morning drive, as it seems to be either them or WBBBM gets the #1 spilt in the ratings.

A lot of people are moving to Wisconsin. Maybe that’s it, on weekends they’re out there listening on 96.9. Kenosha is booming. Even Racine from Foxconn.

.

It's not just people moving to Wisconsin. Here in McHenry county, where I live....which is still part of the Chicago metro.....WWDV/96.9 has a stronger signal than WDRV. As well as the other Chicago FMs....most of which can be a little "scratchy" out here at best.

FWIW Factoid.....

If I'm not mistaken, this ratings book marks the station that liked to refer to itself as having "The Most Respected Call Letters in Broacasting," WGN, now being beaten by a low-powered Franken FM.

Wow,

Looks like WLS is still in the lower rankings.

Is Shapiro really getting any ratings?
His interview with BBC's Andrew Neil in May was a disaster.

He is clearly not ready for any real broadcasting gig and it is showing.

Compared to WGN? They'd love to find a half point.

Compare their point this year to last year to WLS is that really much an improvement. Bow WGN Radio they have never really recovered from the days that the late Kevin Metheney was their program director. Prior to when it started making chances, WGN Radio was a station that you could turn on in the morning, and then then leave on all day until the early evening hours depending on how you felt about sports talk. Mehteney and Michaels had a plan to shake things up at WGN Radio. Is strange how Steve Cochran is the only time host that even cracks into the top ten. Now look back at rRobert Feder's report https://www.robertfeder.com/2019/08/06/chicago-radio-ratings-drive-revs-top-18-years/ , Steve Cochran's morning show only beats out 3 radio stations morning show in last place in the top then is WBEZ with Morning Edition/Morning Show with Jennifer White, the later show is scheduled to end soon.
