It's July. Where's WMEX?

Anything new to report on the "new" 1510 and its translator? Now that Big 105.3's oldies format has gone online-only, there would seem to be an audience (albeit out of the Sacred Sales Demo) waiting.

Last report I saw about a week ago from someone who visited WATD said that the new studio being built there for WMEX is still in progress under construction and not done yet, and said they are also in progress of loading a digital library of thousands of oldies mainly from the '50s through '70s for it. It won't be on early this month though, maybe later. No definite target date was mentioned.

Somehow I have a vision of Ed Perry on a Donkey, dressed as Don Quixote , tilting his sword at a radio tower.

The launch date keeps getting pushed back and pushed back and pushed back........ poor Joe McMillan cant broadcast from his beloved brockton fair!

Another post on Remembering WMEX facebook says that Ed plans to have them back on in (...see you...in)
September.
Dennis DiNapoli:
>>Ed is saying WMEX will should return sometime in September ?

If the call wasn't already in use in Syracuse, I'd suggest Ed change his station's to WOLF, seeing as how he's cried wolf so many times already.

The date keeps getting later and later and later.. its been pushed back at least half a dozen times!!

It has been two years since regular broadcasting. The first period of silence began around July 1 of 2017. Ed Perry announced intent to purchase around Dec of that year. He managed to get the station on before
the deadline of June 30/July 1 of 2018 with a WATD simulcast. Periodic turn ons to keep the license alive. Yes we kept hearing "back on by..." several times. Rome wasn't built in a day and there are some reasons
why a full time return is still a bit away. The process allows for that and also any FM translators may take awhile to "build".

On the FCC's silent station list
>>AM WMEX BOSTON MA 11/10/2018 12789
>> AM WBMS BROCKTON MA 4/4/2019 19631

The dates are "silent since..." but I thought WMEX was on a bit after the date given...it would have to be if silent STA is for a six month period.

Though:
>>After review, the staff may grant Special Temporary Authority for a period not exceeding 180 days, but extensions may be approved upon the submission of a new STA request.
>>a licensee must explain in the extension request what efforts it has made to return the station to operation during the period of its STA and why an extension is needed. Stations may remain silent for no more than one year. The licenses of stations remaining silent for more than one year are considered by the Commission to have automatically expired as a matter of law pursuant to Section 312(g) of the Communications Act.

So if they're allowing one full year (with "reasons given") maybe they have till Nov.?

When this is all said and done, it could cost Ed Perry ( or his estate) WATD-FM

WBMS was bad enough.... but then you double down with WMEX and sink hundreds of thousands of dollars into 2 stations ( and translators) that are worth next to nothing.

Cripes there are licensees all over the country that are turning in licenses for less.... and that is because nobody will take them as a donation anymore.. non profits have smartened up about taking pink elephants.

Even IF ... IF Ed Perry gets them on the air, there is no way they are economically viable. EMF would not take them for free!

On the North Shore/Merrimack Valley Costa-Eagle just washed its hands of a small AM and a Translator....

Remember the BS with WBMS being on air , STA, on Air, STA, and having no stability has been going on for over 4 years now.

What is the longest amount of time it has been on the air with full licensed power in the last 52 months?

And WBMS 1460
Sometime late October"

LOL... and ive got a bridge to sell you in brooklyn. the day keeps getting pushed back.. every time, whoever delivers that message makes it sound so definite .. and yet, more delays. Theres no way getting these stations on the air in some semi permanent fashion, even if from long term temporary facilities should take this long. Theres no way these stations will ever turn much of a profit..

The extension of the STA to remain silent expires on 11/11/19:

im not questioning the legalties.. im just saying.. these stations will never amount to much, if they even ever get back on

No question of that. The point here is there is little chance of getting another extension beyond 11/11 - so if Ed doesn't get it on the air by then - it's all over.

all he has to do is turn it back on for a few days before that and find some plausible excuse to turn them back off.

Hasn't he done that already?

yeah and? i dont think theres anything stopping him from doing it again, if he can prove there's something beyond his control from keeping it on and hes made progress towards getting it on permanently

When a transmitter site is lost and it takes longer than anticipated to rebuild due to issues of uncontrollables like zoning, the FCC will continue to renew the authorization to remain silent.

I recall a case where a site was lost due to a combination of eminent domain seizure and the conversion of the site into a controlled wetlands. The station had wanted to rebuild following a flood event, but the various authorities decided against it and took over the land.

The station ran into issues with permits, NIMBY protests and the like and was off for many years. Eventually, when they were spending too much money on legal costs, they sold to a co-channel station which was then allowed to open up its pattern.

But in the meantime, it was off for many, many years.

I thing the owner has a business model where the stations serve small areas of the market and offer ad rates that local businesses can afford. There are many such firms which can't afford the major Boston stations as they waste coverage on areas where their clients don't live and are way to expensive.
