August Chicago Radio Ratings

let's see what the Godfather of Chicago radio (aka Robert Feder) has to say about those ratings in his next column...

Wow...can anyone tell me (or guess) what is going on with WTMX?

Is their day in the sun over?

Looks like the normal summer panel turnover lost them a couple of heavy P1 listeners. They are still #3 in 25-54, so it's not as if the sky had fallen.

WRME 87.75 is at #11, "Smack Dab In The Middle" of Chicago Full Power FMs in overall ratings. And it has three times the overall ratings of the station which was formerly WSDM, which is physically smack dab in the middle of the FM BC Band. In the old days of slide rule dials, if you tuned to 87.75, you were likely to get the dial pin stuck and have to take it apart to fix it. Regardless of the demographics, there is something seriously amiss with "mainstream" programming if a hard to tune lower power Franken FM can take that much of your audience away.

The simplified answer is that there is no other station purposely serving just boomers.

The fact is that there are lots of stations that serve the upper end of 25-54 that get lots of 55-64 listening as "spillage". But they don't target seniors because, in Chicago, much of the revenue is based on buying the traditional sales demos and WRME does not reach them.

In this last book, WRME was tied for 28th in 25-54. The tie is with WMBI-FM.

Yesterday, on WLS AM, Mancow announced that he is now #5 in the mornings.
Where is that in the ratings that Feder posted?

I have the report out, so you can look at it and see for morning drive, what I can tell you that Mancow is telling you and his listeners a story, he is not even in the top ten at all, and I don't know actually where he falls as Robert Feder only reports the top 10 stations for each of morning drive, middays, afternoon drive, and evenings. SO you can geel free to call WLS AM, see if he puts you on the air, and you can call him out.

SO why did you respond?

BECAUSE the question was asked....

....."can anyone tell me (or guess) what is going on with WTMX?"

So I thought I'd take a stab at answering. :) As well as indicate that the answer is of no concern to me. (i.e. "no skin in the game",)

The biggest downward mover was WTMX. The closest thing to a corresponding upward move was for WLS. Correlattion? Damned if I know, but WLS' gain COULD have been part of what happened to WTMX.

Even Rob Feder didn't answer the question to the best of my knowledge.

Okay I can get your reasoning, but it is still like a waste of time, it is just like responding to something or question you won't care about by saying "who cares". You could have passed it on anybody somebody else could have responded.
