Higher Powered AM Stations in Atlantic Canada

Most AM stations in the Maritime provinces have migrated to FM. Some communities, such as Halifax, have no stations on the AM dial. But a number of AM stations, especially those with Class A status, remain on the air. In the years since the original clear channel stations lost some of their protections, Maritime Canada stations on those frequencies were promoted to Class A. In other cases, they are Class B but still run 10,000 watts around the clock, giving them good coverage over Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

590 VOCM broadcasts at 20,000 watts and 930 CFBC runs at 50,000 watts with a directional antenna. One station that had been 50,000 watts non-directional and heard around the Northeastern U.S., 1070 CBA Moncton, switched to FM in April 2008. No private broadcaster ever took over the AM station.

540 CBT Grand Falls, NF (CBC) 10 kw Class A
590 VOCM St. John's, NF (Talk and Oldies) 20 kw Class B
640 CBN St. John's, NF (CBC) 10 kw Class A
710 CKVO Clarrenville, NF (Talk and Oldies - Simulcasts VOCM nights and weekends) 10 kw Class B
740 CHCM Marystown, NF (Talk and Oldies - Simulcasts VOCM nights and weekends) 10 kw Class B
750 CBGY Bonavista Bay, NF (CBC) 10 kw Class A
930 CFBC Saint John, NB (Country music) 50 kw Class B
990 CBY Corner Brook, NF (CBC) 10 kw Class A
1140 CBI Sydney, NS (CBC) 10 kw Class B
1260 CKHJ Fredericton, NB (Country music) 10 kw Class B
1270 CJCB Sydney, NS (Country music) 10 kw Class B

VOCM is one of only four radio stations in Canada which has a call sign beginning with a V, from the days when Newfoundland had not yet become part of the Canadian Federation.

Fine list there ; thanx Gregg.

I would imagine that the Newfoundland station on 740 (CHCM) is a 10,000 watt directional, no? CFZM Toronto has a real Bigfoot-dimension footprint through just about everything else. That NF8M coverage depiction doesn't even show the Newfoundland station.
I'd also guess that those swell NF8M maps show the 'protected' radii of the nighttime 'clears' and regionals. Now, CFZM is NOT going to be heard in, say, Orlando any time soon.

Btw : Did you mean VOCM is or was one of four stations with t he 'V' prefix ?

And does the short-wave CHNX still exist ?

'Preciate the list!

VOCM is one of the four remaining. Sister station VOCM-FM 97.5 is one, despite coming on the air after Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949. The others are VOWR 800 and VOAR-FM 96.7, formerly on 1210.

And, technically, we're talking about the VO, not V, prefix. VO was assigned by the ITU to the Dominion of Newfoundland, and was reassigned to Canada upon Newfoundland's joining it in 1949. Canada already had (and has) other prefix blocks beginning with V -- VA-VG, and VX-VY, but they're not used in broadcasting. Hams are assigned VA, VE, and VY (Yukon only).

Here are the countries that have prefix blocks beginning with V:
V0, V1, V9: Not assigned
V2: Antigua and Barbuda
V3: Belize
V4: St. Kitts and Nevis
V5: Namibia
V6: Micronesia
V7: Marshall Islands
V8: Brunei
VA-VG, VO, VX-VY: Canada (VO is still reserved by Canada for Newfoundland, but not used for post-1949 broadcast stations)
VH-VN, VZ: Australia
VP-VS: British overseas territories
VT-VW: India.

And does the short-wave CHNX still exist ?
It was shut down in 2001 due to transmitter failure.

I heard VOCM a handful of times last winter on the arctic SDR. And CKVO exactly once.

.....And CHNX on 49 meter shortwave? I definitely miss it. Simulcast of oldies on CHNS (920....also gone).

Correction: VR is now assigned to China for Hong Kong. VP, VQ, and VS are still assigned to the UK for its overseas territories. I was using an old prefix block list.
