Most AM stations in the Maritime provinces have migrated to FM. Some communities, such as Halifax, have no stations on the AM dial. But a number of AM stations, especially those with Class A status, remain on the air. In the years since the original clear channel stations lost some of their protections, Maritime Canada stations on those frequencies were promoted to Class A. In other cases, they are Class B but still run 10,000 watts around the clock, giving them good coverage over Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
590 VOCM broadcasts at 20,000 watts and 930 CFBC runs at 50,000 watts with a directional antenna. One station that had been 50,000 watts non-directional and heard around the Northeastern U.S., 1070 CBA Moncton, switched to FM in April 2008. No private broadcaster ever took over the AM station.

VOCM is one of only four radio stations in Canada which has a call sign beginning with a V, from the days when Newfoundland had not yet become part of the Canadian Federation.
