Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Ten tapes found at a garage sale in Litchfield last Thursday. Awful lot of newer recordings on older stock tapes this time though. Nine keepers in all.

TAPE 1: What the Deaf Man Heard (CBS Hallmark Hall of Fame movie) and first couple minutes of CBS 19 News at 11 taped from WOIO in Cleveland on 11/23/1997 with commercials; Sears Family Theater presentation of Miracle on 34th Street (1994) and first few minutes of Fox 8 News at Ten taped from WJW in Cleveland on Thanksgiving 1997 with commercials. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 2: Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) taped from WJW on 11/25/2005, most commercials are cut, only one near the end is intact. Fuji T-120.

TAPE 3: Lincoln (History Channel documentary) taped from the History Channel on 1/1/2006 with commercials; partially taped-over broadcast of part two of Category 7: The End of the World (CBS miniseries) taped from WPEC in West Palm Beach on 11/17/2005 with commercials (I already have another partial recording of this from WOIO). Memorex T-120.

TAPE 4: Nanny McPhee (2005) taped from AMC in December 2010 with commercials. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 5: The Ultimate Gift (2006) taped from the Hallmark Channel on 12/23/2009 with commercials; part of Disclosure (1994) taped from Bravo in December 2009 with commercials; end credits of Visitors of the Night (1995 NBC made-for-TV movie) and first couple minutes of Channel 3 News at 11:00 taped from WKYC in Cleveland on 7/26/1997; short clip of The Ten O'clock News taped from WUAB in Cleveland circa 1992. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 6: Episodes of Lost taped from WEWS in Cleveland on 3/20/2008, 4/24/2008, 5/1/2008, 5/8/2008 and 5/15/2008, first two episodes include commercials, the others do not. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 7: New Visions of the Future: Prophecies III taped from TLC in March 2001 with commercials; short clip from an episode of Encounters with the Unexplained taped from WPXP in West Palm Beach circa March or April 2001; Heart Full of Rain (1997 CBS made-for-TV movie) taped from Lifetime in April 2001 with commercials; part of Passion and Prejudice (made-for-TV movie) taped from USA on 4/17/2001 with commercials. Kodak T-120.

TAPE 8: Jerusalem: Center of the World and part of Pat Boone: Love Letters in the Sands of Time taped from WPBT in Miami in March 2010 with pledge breaks and promos; partially taped-over broadcast of Wrong Turn (2003) taped from FX on 1/5/2010 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 9: Two episodes of Whose Line Is It Anyway taped from WEWS on 11/16/2000 minus most commercials, only one was intact. Fuji T-120.

Also, last week, I picked up another tape from the Salvation Army Family Store in Copley.
TAPE 10: Episode of Nature, first two episodes of Savage Skies and partial episode of Waiting for God taped from WNEO/WEAO in Akron in summer 1996 with promos; Tornado! (Fox made-for-TV movie) taped from WJW on 9/1/1996 with commercials; Never Fade Away: Remembering Buddy Holly taped from TNN in June 1996 with commercials; partially taped-over broadcast of Tuesday Night Fights taped from USA in May 1996 with commercials; partially taped-over episode of Hope & Gloria and episode of The Home Court taped from WKYC on 3/30/1996 with commercials; partially taped-over episode of High Incident taped from WEWS on 3/12/1996 with commercials. BASF T-160.

Also, for those of you who are familiar with the AOA DVD Ripper, for whatever reason, my software has not been working with a couple of DVD+Rs I finalized of some of the more recent finds I want to put on YouTube. The DVD will load into the ripper, but when I try to rip anything, it won't rip or convert anything from said discs. I did install a different piece of software called WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, and it does work with the latest discs I put together, but it is not nearly as user-friendly as AOA is. Does anyone have any idea of what the problem I'm having with AOA could be and what I should do? When I try to rip, it will stall for a minute or two, and then a message will appear that says "Unable to read" or something to that effect.

Would you be interested in selling the tape with attack of the clones from WJW on it?

A pretty drive into upper Kittitas County resulted in a few scattered finds. Two estate sales, one west of Cle Elum off I-90 exit 78 on Nelson Siding Road, and another in Cle Elum itself.

Nelson Siding Road estate sale - These people used to live in Kirkland
Tape 1 - First 2 hours of 'The Great Escape II' (1988) taped off KSTW-11 on 12/27/1998 with commercials (SP). TDK T-120
Tape 2 - 13-minute clip of KING 5 News at Noon taped sometime in December 1998 with commercials (SP); rest of tape is blank. TDK T-120
Tape 3 - 'The Quick & The Dead' (1987) taped off KSTW-11 in early February 1993 with commercials; partial broadcast of Night Flight taped off KTZZ-22 in September 1993 with commercials (Duran Duran videos); partial broadcast of A Country Music Celebration taped off KIRO/CBS on 2/6/1993 with commercials; partial broadcast of KIRO News at Noon, As the World Turns, Guiding Light, Sally Jessy Raphael and first several minutes of Donahue taped off KIRO/CBS 2/4/1993 with commercials (the final newscast with the old set, includes a tour of the News Out of the Box set that would become an epic disaster). Scotch T-120

Cle Elum estate sale
Tape 4 - Clip of KING 5 Morning News taped 11/24/1993; part of Cheers: Last Call! and the finale of Cheers taped off KING/NBC on 5/20/1993 with commercials (already have this taped off KNDO, which at the time was not carried on Cle Elum cable. It all switched around sometime in the 2000s and except for KING, every network now comes from Yakima). Scotch T-120
Not included, but semi-duds: two tapes had partial home video footage of Cle Elum-Roslyn Warriors basketball and football games from the early 1990s.

New member after years of lurking, one of the biggest VHS/Beta fanatics out there

To answer the question, the oldest item I've ever found is a partial recording of the first night of The Amazing Howard Hughes off KNXT (today's KCBS) on April 13, 1977, beginning midway through the two-hour broadcast and ending with the first few minutes of the 11 o'clock news, including commercial breaks. The Sony K-60 was recorded in Beta I mode (Beta II was introduced later in 1977, meaning that tapes could only record one hour, and the side of the tape has a "2" sticker, implying that there was likely another tape that contained the first half of this early miniseries.

In terms of a VHS find, it was a recording of a repeat of the November 1978 special Steve Martin: A Wild And Crazy Guy, followed by The Best of Saturday Live, Part II recorded off WBAL on May 4, 1979 (my late grandpa's 60th birthday) with commercials, followed by a network rerun of Saturday Night Live with Carrie Fisher guest host from the following night, also with those commercials left in. I've posted those to YouTube a couple years ago if you haven't seen those yet.

Yes, I'm the same pannoni4, pannoni6, pannoni8,and pannoni10 posting here, and it's wonderful hearing about your finds. It's getting harder and harder to find those 1980s (let alone late 1970s) finds that I really treasure discovering. About 75% of my posts on YouTube and the Internet Archive come from finds, with about 20% coming from tape trades, including most of the 1950s-70s stuff that I've got. With that said, 2019 has been a banner year in terms of new finds. I'm pretty much exclusively online with regard to searching since very few thrift stores in my area carry prerecorded VHS tapes, and my luck at yard/estate sales that I tried last year comes up with almost nothing. Three key finds come to mind this year. The first big haul came back in February, where a Craigslist find from this listing, which is still active of this post: https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/emd/d/washington-crossing-betamax-tapes/6989586257.html

This came from a long phone call where the seller's dad recorded stuff like Dance Fever, Solid Gold, the 1984 Summer and Winter Olympics, original broadcast of later season episodes of Love Boat and Fantasy Island, rare shows like Dancin' To The Hits, Dreamgirl U.S.A., an episode of Thicke Of The Night, and a HUGE collection of Star Search episodes of which I've posted many. About two-thirds contained commercials, mostly off Pittsburgh stations, but a few from the small Wheeling/Stubenville, OH market. The oldest find was from July of 1982 with a couple Dance Fever reruns. A few tapes were old forcing me to manually wind the tape and even snapped with some mold on them, but due to their rarity, had to preserve this hard to find content. It doesn't hurt asking to see if he's got more, but it's mostly movies and some ice skating/dancing competitions at this point.

The second find (All VHS) came in the spring/summer where another Craigslist listing noted tapes containing content such as Redskins games, Jeopardy!, Columbo, Murder, She Wrote, Matlock, and Columbo. The seller lives in Hawaii, so it took several weeks for each box to come, but it was certainly worth the wait. EVERYTHING contained commercials as well, with the oldest find being several hours of footage from the 1984 Summer Olympics (something I don't have from that previous lot). There were also two tapes consisting of about 10 episodes of Jeopardy! from 1987 (one tape containing two weekend reruns of October 1985 episodes), with the bulk of the content being from the early to mid 1990s (the "Grid Set" era), or about 80 episodes total. Most haven't been converted yet. As for the Redskins games, most are from the 1992 and 1993 season, with some from the 1991 season, including the NFC Championship game prior to Super Bowl XXVI, which I've already found previously. Some contain Redskins pregame and postgame shows as well, and several games from the 1992 and 1993 preseason were also found. My only disappointment with this lot was that a few tapes (mostly from 1991) were re-recorded around 2000 with drama reruns off Lifetime/USA, even though one had about half of a final season episode (1991) of Muppet Babies of WUSA. Best of all these tapes were FREE!

The third find (once again all VHS) was a year and a half in the making, dating back to a Messenger post from a Facebook member whose friend passed away several years ago. For about the price of shipping ($50, which was a bit high since he doesn't support Media Mail), I found about 60 tapes consisting of MANY sitcoms, mostly from the 1990s, but a few from the late '80s as well. There were several tapes full of The Young & The Restless episodes with commercials (many from 1987), a couple episodes of the early '90s relationship game show Studs, and The oldest find in this lot was the Star Search Alumni Special from May 1986, which I've already got from the first lot above, which came from the August 1986 rerun. Some of the rare sitcoms found included episodes of Mommies, Nurses, Daddy Dearest, Family Album, Babes, Good Grief, and Carol & Company. There were a few dozen Jerry Springer episodes from 1996-99 as well. All tapes were recorded off St. Louis area stations.

Pannoni1,

I wonder where you got the episode of the NBC soap opera The Doctors from, complete with the late Mel Brandt doing the sponsor vo for Colgate-Palmolive. And i've also downloaded the commercials from that ep too. I've been building my TD collection and my Another World collection with audio airchecks of AW from the 60s. All download off Youtube.

Phenomenal to say, Goodwill keeps delivering here in Ellensburg. Four more with 2 duds. Nothing from the local market (Yakima) or the adjacent Seattle market in this one.

Tape 1 - 'The Man from Snowy River' (1982) taped off unknown channel; 'The Last Starfighter' (1984) taped off unknown channel minus commercials; episode of Our House taped off KCRL-4 Reno NV/NBC on 11/22/1987 with commercials; last few minutes of an episode of Our House taped off KCRL/NBC on 11/8/1987 with commercials. My first find from the Reno market. Universal T-120
Tape 2 - The Oprah Winfrey Show, KREM 2 News First at Five, CBS Evening News and KREM 2 News at Six taped off KREM/CBS on 10/25/1994 with commercials; episode of Nova taped off KSPS/PBS on the same night with promos afterwards; then flips back to KREM/CBS for an evening aircheck of 'Fatal Vows: The Alexandra O'Hara Story' (1994), KREM 2 News at 11, The Late Show with David Letterman and the start of a Murad infomercial with commercials. Scotch T-160
Two were duds, but one was filled with 1993 programming, consisting of wrestling clips, Ren & Stimpy and Are You Afraid of the Dark? episodes, America's Most Wanted, Cops, and even a Barney & Friends at the end for some reason. All minus commercials of course.

*I found out why I keep finding blanks here today when the lady was kind of confused. They double-tape random retail and blank VHS tapes as 'blocks' for the shelves for their DVDs/books/etc. So that's why I saw multiple 'blocks' of tapes behind the DVDs and retail VHS tapes. There was another twin 'block' of tapes I noticed with a Hee Haw retail 'best of' blocked up with another Maxell blank marked 'Code 1'. I figured it was some type of law enforcement training tape, so I didn't take it. They still charged me for the twin blocks of course...but I don't mind.

There were no sales in town this weekend. I think the season is just about finished for 2019.

I also missed posting these finds from Goodwill on 10/19/19. Again, twin-bundled in the back.

Tape 1 - Half an episode of Jungle Cubs, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and most of Science Court taped off KOMO/ABC's C-Band feed (Spacenet 4, transponder 8, part of Primetime 24 West) on 5/9/1998 with commercials. Moderate amount of sparklies in picture at times. Original owner likely lived in an area where cable was non-existent and the KAPP translator was too weak. AWESOME find! TDK T-120
Tape 2 - 'Men in Black II' (2002) and 'Sunshine State' (2003) taped off unknown pay-TV channels; episode of Scooby-Doo Where Are You taped off Cartoon Network in December 2003 with most commercials. Unknown branded T-120 in 1990s Memorex box

Those came from a certain trader of which the bulk of my vintage 1950s-70s finds have come from. Lately, the traders haven't been nearly as old with their finds (1990s and newer, with some older content, but a lot from newer reruns). Quads and 1/2"s are where to find the super old stuff, but I've never used a machine to convert and hear that they're difficult to not just find, but process. It seems lately that more and more eBay finds are out of market as more people who used VCRs as young adults retire and head to states like Florida or Arizona. I generally have strayed on yard sales lately because they're a lot more time/gas consuming that often yields no results, and stick with online sources. I've never found any good audio airchecks as well; most blank cassette tapes I've seen are just copied from other tapes/records. I do download a few things online on occasion, such as a couple episodes of Wheel of Fortune from March 1982 recently (the short-lived period where Pat Sajak's lovely assistant was Susan Stafford).

Haven't had any luck finding any new tapes these last few weeks. We're starting to hit the time of year where it'll be harder to find these things in the wild because garage sale season is pretty much over. Once in a while, I'll still see estate sales pop up here and there during the winter season, but sometimes those can be hit and miss as well. Speaking of thrift stores, the Value World store just a few blocks away from my weekly Internet radio DJ gig had a sale on VHS tapes last week, but of course, they were all retail tapes of movies and such. I have had luck at that store three times before in the last few months finding used blanks.

One guy I know on YouTube who seems to have even better luck finding these tapes than I do goes by the name Smoke. I probably shared this before, but he keeps a record of his findings in the form of a Google Slideshow. I'm kind of surprised at how many used blanks he's found at his local Goodwill store while the three closest Goodwills in my area hardly ever stock retail tapes anymore.

Recently, I pieced together something similar cataloging my VHS finds over the years (or at least most of them). The difference between how many I have compared to how many Smoke has is HUGE!

Lastly, another YouTuber I follow recently tweeted this photo, which shows that at least some of the few Radio Shack stores left still stock blank VHS tapes in their original packaging.

Do you ever put any of your tapes up for sale online? If so let me know would be interested in a few thanks.

I just sold a bunch of Beta and VHS over on eBay, and have two unsold early 2000s lots currently up that are scheduled to end Thursday. Most of the tapes have commercials, with many off of the Lexington, KY, St. Louis, and Knoxville, TN markets if you're interested.

Another thing that may be of interest is that many months after I presumably assume something, special "surprise" finds come about that aren't listed on the labels, usually those end-of-tape finds. As it turns out, from that February lot full of Betas recorded mostly in Pittsburgh, one tape that I converted last night, in addition to episodes of Dance Fever and Dream Girl U.S.A. from 11/15/1986 off WPXI with commercials as well as another episode of DGUSA from the wee hours of 11/22/86, also consisted of a rebroadcast of WPXI's late news, as well as a classic rerun of a 1962 episode of Route 66, an episode of the game show Strike It Rich, an hour of CNN Headline News, and about the first ten minutes of the New Zoo Club I believe. I swear the 60 second Lee Press-On Nails commercial appeared like ten times; just to fill commercial time in those early 24/7 days!

Unfortunately, as soon as I placed the next tape in, I discovered that the linear audio tapeheads on my Beta isn't working properly, operating at about 25% of its proper volume on linear mode, so I'll have to resort to VHS for now except for a little tape hunt later this week. Any idea which of the parts represents that, along with the proper cleaning method that I should use since those dry cleaners only take care of the video heads? (I know the Hi-Fi, which still works fine, is located inside the rotating drum). That tape I described above was recorded in Hi-Fi, and some of the tapes in that lot had some mold issues, so unfortunately, after about nine months of buildup, needs a bit of a repair.

New Zoo Revue.
Great find on the Strike it Rich. Too bad it didn't last long, with the late great Joe Garagiola hosting.

Oh nice.

That tape I described above was recorded in Hi-Fi, and some of the tapes in that lot had some mold issues, so unfortunately, after about nine months of buildup, needs a bit of a repair.

What is your ebay store link I will check it out.

Do you have any with any star wars movies recorded off tv or montel williams shows? Thank you.

I don't think I've got any from Montel, but if you check out these listings, you'll get an idea of what's on them.

Got not just an eBay lot of Betas coming in, but another FREE lot from a friend coming soon as well, and the later mentioned that quite a few recordings from 1982-84 are on it. Probably my last search of the year ahead of the holidays for me, since there's LOTS of seasonal stuff to post soon!

Back after a bit of a hiatus, just found my oldest (age to date) tape so far from a Goodwill bin:

1980 college basketball
1979 ALCS Game 4 postgame-- October 6, 1979, over 40 years old, no joke!
More to come as I watch live.

1980 college basketball
1979 ALCS Game 4 postgame-- October 6, 1979, over 40 years old, no joke!
More to come as I watch live.

Say that again as an Orioles fan whose never witnessed a pennant my entire life, although a nearby team just completed a moment of success. On my end, eight keepers today (all Betas).

Tape 1: In Harms Way (Vintage John Wayne movie) taped off WTBS on 12/6/1984 with commercials and several Newswatch breaks, also includes the first half hour of the late movie as well
Tape 2: Most of The Longest Day (1962 WWII period movie), taped off KMOL (NBC's San Antonio affiliate) on 1/23/1983 with commercials
Tape 3: The Frogman (another vintage WWII-era movie), USA Tonight, a One Day At A Time rerun, and a Mega Memory infomerical off superstation WGN on 3/29/1990 with commercials (I've always wondered why WGN left their local ads nationally in while TBS didn't)
Tape 4: Begins with the film Caine Mutiny copied off a rental tape, then cuts to Jeopardy! and the first ten minutes or so of the KATV 5 O'Clock News on 11/12/1987 w/ads, then cuts over to most of another edition of USA Tonight, a Laverne & Shirley and Company syndie rerun, and part of the WGN Late Movie on 10/8/1987 w/commercials.
Tape 5: Begins with about half of a Late Night with David Letterman rerun (from the 3rd Anniversary show, but with poor video and sound quality), then cuts over (in much better quality) to the last few minutes of game 2 of the 1985 NBA World Championship on May 30, 1985 (Finals was first used in '86), followed by the KTBC 10 PM News and part of a Taxi rerun, then cutting back for The CBS Evening News, the KTBC 6 PM News, and the first three rounds of Wheel of Fortune on Memorial Day 1985 with commercials. Nice to see some vintage Austin news back when the TX capital was just a middle market instead of the major one like it is now.
Tape 6: Starts with The Marx Brothers at The Circus copied from a rental, then cuts to an episode of An Evening At The Improv of A&E and February 1986 with commercials, then cuts to most of Family Ties and part of Cheers off KMOV on 2/20/86 with a few commercial breaks (after the intros to Cheers and Family Ties as well as the Cheers midshow break, but with the midshow and final breaks, as well as the closing credits of Family Ties paused out unfortunately).
Tape 7: No commercials on this per se, but I decided to keep this because it consists of two episodes of Saturday Night Live from November 1975 from their uncut NBC Video releases. The guest hots were Richard Pryor and Lily Tomlin. This followed a rental copy of Beverly Hills Cop. Yes, I've got the first two episodes of SNL with their original commercials, but given that VCR recording was rare back then and numerous butchered 60- and even 30-minute versions of these early SNL episodes have aired, I've decided to keep this.

There were about a dozen duds unfortunately, and that included a recording of Super Bowl XXIII from 1989 where most of the commercials (except for the Bud Bowl and a couple from Diet Coke) were zapped out, along with almost all of the Halftime Show. Of course, those features are just as much part of the experience, but I'll still eventually sell it just for the game itself.

Didnt know the best way to edit the original post, so here were the contents of the oldest tape I've found BY FAR, yes 40 years old:

1980/2/16 Georgia Tech at Wake Forest basketball (90 seconds or so was recorded over by 1990s Disney Channel, I guess kid was grounded and it stopped)
1979/10/6 ALCS Game 4, postgame only, my guess it was recorded over by the prior thing
1979? Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders halftime show routine, only a few minutes in length, weird
1979/10/28 Auburn Coaches Show (Doug Barfield) Auburn vs Wake Forest from WATL Channel 36 (was an independent channel then in Atlanta)
1979/10/28 Country Serenade---I believe this was some sort of syndicated music show, didn't find anything about it online WATL 36
1979/10/28? A Farewell to Arms (1932) also WATL 36---I'm amazed how much we have improved in regards to showing movies on TV, they were obviously airing a copy of a copy of a film print, it was dark, out of focus, and in terrible quality. The commercials looked great, even on an HDTV, but the film itself was barely watchable.
1979/10/28? Coral Gables: Global City of the Future also WATL 36---Strange tourism short documentary that was probably made by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, why this aired on an Atlanta independent station to fill time for a short movie I'm not sure.
