NewsTalk 990 WNTP now 990 The Answer

As mentioned in the chris stigall thread, but figured it deserved its on thread- WNTP has switched branding to 990 The Answer.

radio-online article: https://news.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=n37790

Stigall says " "I can't wait to be back with the smartest audience in all of radio as we work to bring the Keystone State home again in 2020. There's never been a more exciting time in history to launch a new radio show. I'm so proud and excited to call AM990 the Answer my new home!"

So, not a format flip of course, but do we think this will increase listenership? I'd love to see some numbers during the 2016 election and see whether or not WNTP saw an uptick in audience. They have a blowtorch daytime signal so it's not hard to receieve during day, but the decrease to 10kW at the WWDB site (or is it the WKDN site?) hurts nighttime listeners badly.

I'm glad to see Salem hasn't abandoned WNTP, and I am interested to hear the new branding on air.

I thought the towers were on the station’s property in the back .
Anyway I listen to them , but I bet Hewitt’s numbers weren’t that good . My choice is Zeoli and his gang over at 1210. But Stigall is formidable - he is an excellent writer- so we’ll see .
“The answer “ - I never cared for it , it’s in New York and everywhere else .

Right - it's only a branding change, not a format change (like, say, when the station flipped from rock and roll to religion in the WZZD days). And I'm not sure what station you're thinking of (950, maybe), but 990 has only ever been at the one site on Ridge Pike as far back as the 1940s. The old girl has been through plenty of changes - she's only using four towers these days, not five (that's thanks to the 1980s relaxation of protection to CBW in Canada), but always only at the Ridge Pike site, never anywhere else.

I've been listening for the last couple of mornings and the show is fine but the audio is terrible. Stigall was interviewing the duo known as "Diamond & Silk" and it was a struggle to hear what they were saying. It wasn't the signal, it was the audio. I switched over to 1210 for a quick comparison and the audio on that station was clear and concise as always. There really is no comparison.

I'd been pleasantly surprised for a while that Salem allowed Philadelphia to keep its own branding and unique stationality for as long as it did. I suppose "The Answer" was inevitable.

It just figures after more than 15 years without a local show, WNTP finally gets into the game while simultaneously dropping the unmistakably-hometown Philadelphia liner voice of Kim Martin's for a national one.
