Golden Globes Down 2%

In the surface, that's not a huge drop. But apparently the show was down 18% in key demos:

This article notes a 21 minute gap between the end of the football game to the start of the Golden Globes. The football game had more than twice the viewers of the awards show. Then again, they're two very different audiences. Starting with a host monologue is not the way to keep sports viewers, if I was giving them advice. Especially this host, who threw in some bleeped f-bombs.

I am not a viewer of these types of shows but caught part of the intro at the hockey game.

This is how millennials watch TV, and why overnight ratings have nothing to do with the impact of programming.

If you look at any major newspaper today, the various comments by winners and the host are on the front page. That's what Variety would call "Boffo."

Why does it matter if they keep the sports viewers? NBC shouldn't have been airing a game anyway. The network was scheduled to show the Red Carpet.

I liked the show. Ricky Gervais should host every year.

I just wish I had actually seen even one nominated TV series. How can network TV be completely ignored? I don't want to pay for any of those other services.

I do want to see most of the nominated movies.

All awards shows have seen big drops in recent years. The audience levels for these may now be stabilizing at the lower level. The Demo dropoff can likely be explained by a lot of viewers having been at the top of the younger level migrating to a different age group.

It was good to see Gervais put some of these virtue signalling jerks in their place.

The game might have went long by 10 minutes. I doubt they would hold up the GG's for over an hour.

Maybe the Globes would have moved to Bravo. I have a feeling we'll never know, since double overtime games are an extreme rarity. This is a circumstance the NFL would have to take into account if it were to consider switching to the NCAA overtime system, in which teams alternate possessions from each other's 25-yard line. Those OTs have been known to stretch over six rounds or more and consume at least a half-hour.

I hate the NCAA OT rule.

What was the plan is this game had a double overtime? No ties in the playoffs. Would the game have moved to NBCSN?

The guidance NBC offered to affiliates stated that both the NFL game and Golden Globes would air in their entireties on NBC without exception. NBC was prepared to slide the Golden Globes as long as necessary, though if a lengthy delay had been expected, I think the Golden Globes would've begun in person as scheduled and aired delayed on NBC. There would've been international broadcasters expecting the show to start on time to take into consideration, not to mention the production crew and attendees at the Beverly Hilton.
