AM Frequency of the week: 580

Crystal Lake, IL....

Days: WILL, The University of Illinois' NPR station from Champaign IL. about 130 miles south of me. Fair signal,

Nights: 580 is now fairly empty. Multiple signals but weak and unidentifiable. WKTY and WTCM most likely surface, but neither is particularly frequent.

Retro: In the 1960s, CKY from Winnipeg was a semi-regular qnd good top-40 listen. They migrated to FM years ago, Two other now-defunct Canadians also used to show up occasionally. CKPR from Thunder Bay, Ontario and CKAP from Kapuskasing, Ontario. (,,,,and yes, I've actually been to Kapuskqsing. Spent a night there.)

Mason City, IA:
Days- A mostly weak WKTY/La Crosse
Nothing- Mostly nothing

Central KS:
Days- WIBW/Topeka
Nights- WIBW is still mostly receivable

From far southwest suburban Kansas City:

Day: WIBW with a near local strength signal

Critical Hours: WIBW until they switch to a directional nighttime pattern. Then, they gradually disappear with the coming darkness. Mornings, just the opposite.

Night: WIBW at times but not for long periods, XEAV, Guadalajara, Mexico, especially toward morning critical hours. Otherwise, no other stations logged to date.

Bob

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WILL Urbana, IL
Nightime: open frequency WIBW, WELO, WKTY, WTCM common visitors

DX/RETRO: other received throughout the years include KALB (Alexandria, LA), WCHS (Chrleston, WV), WHP (Harrisburg, PA), bunch of Canadians (CKAP, CKPR, CKY, CHLC). XEFI (Chihuahua) used to be quite common log back in 1980/90's, as well as XEMU (Piedras Negras) and Radio Rebelde from Cuba. Spain on split frequency 585 kHz received in 2005. Still shooting for Puerto Rico, but no luck so far.

In the near north Chicago suburbs WILL in the daytime with a fairly good signal.
At night not much these days.

Retro: CKY used to have a pretty good signal.

Laramie, WY

KUBC at/after sunrise

WIBW After sunset .. and KUBC if they dont power down/switch pattern

Retro: CKY used to have a pretty good signal.

Sidebar point: I've mentioned this before...For a couple of years in the mid-late 90s. Guess Who lead singer Burton Cummings hosted afternoon drive oldies on CKY. Listening to him was a treat. A serious rock music historian, record collector, and great storyteller. Listening to him was a hoot...and he was even good at reading commercials and weather forcasts, etc.

The signal? I had a major customer in Northwest Minnesota, and a couple of smaller ones in Winnipeg, so I'd make that run 2-3 times a year. CKY daytime was always good for at least 200 miles into Minnesota and the Dakotas. And the U.S.-Canada border was about 65 miles south of the CKY stick(s). Actually, CBW, CJOB, and the now-defunct CKRC (630) all had day signals that were comparable.

Funny you should mention 580. (I knew it was on the docket).

East Tennessee: Local WXRH (formerly WYHM), fired back up at or shortly after midnight last night (Sun morning) at daytime power after being off the air a week or so. After the sale to the group that owns WIHG and other stations in the Crossville market, 580 has been silent off and on. They were simulcasting WIHG HD4 with oldies, then silent but apparently now have their permanent arrangement as the feeder for a translator for "93.3 the Ranch" (sometimes actually mentioning AM 580). This evening I noted them still on day facilities. They were widely heard last night, and I got them on both the Central Indiana and North Atlanta SDRs.
Otherwise, my most common catch on 580 is WCHS.

Retro/other: Monitoring 580 on the Central Indiana SDR, it's WILL during the day, and various others at night, including WCHS and WELO, Tupelo, MS.

I used to go to Northern Minnesota in the late 80s-early 90s when my daughter went to summer camp up there.
CKY was a fun listen with their oldies format, but I think this was before Burton Cummings was there.

.
It would've been. My regular business trips to Northerrn Minnesota and Winnipeg ran from 1991-2001. IIRC Cummings stint on CKY was towards the end of that, and lasted for about a year or two. He definitely seemed to be enjoying it.

Huntsville, AL - Daytime - a weak but audible WELO, Tupelo, MS. Critical hours include WILL, WXRH, WCHS and WGAC. A couple of times this winter matched WKSK, West Jefferson, NC to their stream. Nighttime a mismash of signals.

I wish I could've heard him. CKY was a fun station to listen to back then.

Daytime is WHP Harrisburg PA. Their omni signal in the day no doubt is what prevents directional WARM Scranton on 590 from coming in better.

I did catch an ID or two from WCHS Charleston WV on a few sunsets. They have pretty much the monster signal. One evening I caught them alone, on top, in Norfolk VA.

West central Georgia:

Days: WACQ Tuskegee AL 500/139 classic hits - fair reception

Nights: A mess, sometimes catch WDBO Orlando FL 5000 ESPN Sports or WGAC August GA 5000/840 news/talk

Would like to catch WIBW Topeka KS or WHP Harrisburg PA or WCHS Charleston WV 5000 watt signals sometime at night but so far no luck

Has anyone in the east ever received KMJ 50,000 watts from Fresno CA?

Altamonte Springs FL (Orlando suburb) WDBO ESPN 580 all the time. I always wondered how well people heard this channel in other states. Great signal for 5KW.
