NFL Honors, what's the point

Every year I ask why the NFL has an awards show tape delayed by 3 hours and they allow everything to be announced ahead of time.

Money.

There are also other NFL-related things going on in Miami the night before the game. But yes, they do this awards show in the afternoon, and require the network with the rights to run it in prime time.

I think it makes sense because TV ratings on Saturday night are just awful. Live sports gets decent ratings on Saturday night, but this is an awards show that (if live in prime time) would get killed by regular season NBA, NCAA, and NHL games. The tape delay allows for it to be cut down to a manageable length for the broadcast network.

At least NDA the reporters so stuff doesn't leak out early.

I mentioned there was another NFL event tonight, and it was the annual Bud Music Fest. Similar to the NFL Awards, they pre-taped the performances and aired them as a late night special on Fox. I just received this note:

In case you missed SUPER BOWL EVE, night three of Bud Light Super Bowl Music Fest, highlights include Demi Lovato joining Dan + Shay for a performance of "Speechless, Adam Levine paying tribute to Kobe Bryant and more.

Doing the show live should bring in even more as people would actually watch it.

As long as we didn’t know the winners ahead of time. I didn’t see the point of watching when I already knew who won all the awards.

Not much different than other awards shows, where winners are announced live to the east coast, and Pacific time viewers already know the winners by the time it's shown on the west coast.

This was a show honoring certain people, not awards with multiple nominees, so it was probably known ahead of time who was being honored, like hall of fame inductees.

Our Fox affiliate was airing it in SD for some reason.

If you try to NDA reporters, they will not attend. If you try to do that for everyone who attends, you will have a nearly empty room.

Also Hall of Fame Announcements were in it but not a lot about it on Networks not like MLB Announcement on MLB Network. The Draft is live but the channels that get to televise the Super Bowl NBC/CBS/FOX don't get to show Draft live.

NFL Network and ESPN have the rights to show the NFL Draft.
