Latest Ratings

What has happened to 94.1. My goodness. The Sound's worst ratings ever, tied for 14th. KRWM way higher.
98.9 stayed in the dumps too, even with Fitz. KIRO FM jumped up, and 92.5 is still on top.
KNKX-HD2 (Jazz-24) receives a 0.1, is that the first time I've ever seen that station?

That stood out for me too. What happened to Fitz? He came back and he appeared to be what the station had been missing. Then he lost everything he gained, and is back to where the station was a year ago.

The HD-2 (and beyond) channels of a subscribed station are listed with a 0.1 if they get just one valid quarter hour credit by one diarykeeper. It's a "thanks for paying us" reward.

WOW did not realize that. Rush Limbaugh on KTTH beating 106.1 'We Don't Identify Ourselves as Kiss.' In a market whose largest county went Democratic in 2016 by *51 percent*.
Flip this cesspool now. Alt 106.1 w/ Woody Show, or KJR Sports 106.1 would probably get a few tenths more than 'unnamed 106.1'.

I wonder if stations like KTTH got a little bump from the Rush Limbaugh cancer news? Maybe a little "might want to listen to him while I can" sort of thing? Or is he even on the air right now?

Remember, the January book just released went from the 2nd to the 29th, and Rush made the announcement on February 3rd. So there was no impact in the book just released.

We can talk about KTTH all we want, but I'm very worried about 94.1. I hope Soft AC isn't a mid-late '10s fad that is now dying off, as KSWD is one of my favorite stations in western WA. What happened!? Are people sick of John Fisher and Delilah now?

I think it's time they throw in the towel too. Carla Marie and Anthony are awesome, but they are no match for 92.5's morning show maybe move Carla Marie and Anthony to another iHeart Pop station in a large city. I like their show I listen online. Maybe a flip to Alternative would be best. I can imagine that 106.1 overlaps musically at times with KUBE.

John Fisher works better with a partner-- Mike West on the Mountain and Jeanne Ashley on the Sound. Once iHeart blew out Jeanne, a dip was coming.....

Seattle is one of the few markets where being a second-fiddle alt rock station isn't that bad. They can pull a little off those sweet KNDD numbers. Maybe help some of the other clustermates look better overall in the monthly horse race.

I'd say go with what they were broadcasting on 102.9 as mostly classic alternative/grunge. It sounded decent and was playing stuff that doesn't get played much on 99.9 or 107.7. Considering iHeart wants national syndication, the flavor of "Alt" we may get might be the Premium Choice version, which is pretty much a straight-on KNDD competitor musically.

Since the format for iHeart is basically 'plug and play', and there would be little payroll overhead running voicetracked talent, I'd say anything they can do to chip away at Entercom's rock stations would be a win over the current half-baked CHR format.

The issue they have to deal with is the demographic differences between Alt and CHR. It can be significant.

I agree. I probably won't be listening if that happens since that really wasn't my thing, but I really thought 102.9 as Alternative sounded pretty good. In Spokane, they have an Alternative format that sort of combines a standard alternative format with the format run on 102.9. It was a lot more current based than 102.9 was, but still had a bit of classic alternative.

As with a lot of these things, whatever flavor of "alt" ends up on there will depend on A) iHeart's allowing programming autonomy of some sort and B) who they are trying to reach.

As BigA mentioned, even though both alternative and top 40 in many cases now try to target the female money demos (younger side of 25-54), what is played will make a big difference. You can discern in many cases that the average top 40 listener for their station might live in the suburbs, has a husband and children. Perhaps the alternative listener is unmarried and lives in an "Apodment" in North Seattle with some additional time and money to hit up bars, clothing boutiques, etc. Grunge/classic alternative/nu metal-heavy? You're looking at men 35-54. Another "New Music Discovery" station? Probably leaning towards females under 35. Both could be considered 'alternative'.

Given how well KNDD does with females, I'd probably push for as close to a copy musically as possible. Ain't my cup of tea, but I think they could do far worse being a third-choice CHR over a second-choice alternative format.

I also thought 102.9 was well-programmed. I'm more of a rock guy, but I found the mix of alt and classic alt there interesting. I think they still run it on an HD2?

Seattle is the home of grunge, so it would seem that alt-rock is a natural here. As to whether it would make money, or predominantly GenX audiences for alternative really matter, I'll leave that to the experts to determine.

Grunge and Gen-X was 30 years ago. Today among most younger fans, grunge is "dad music", "butt-rock", and "screaming old guys". (At least to my Gen-Z teenage daughters and their peers.) In fact, Gen-X has next to zero relevance today in just about anything. And in full disclosure, I happen to come from that irrelevant, butt-rocking generation.

For a clearer perspective, think of pop music from 1950 (Perry Como, Doris Day, Nat King Cole, Kay Starr) and pop music from 1980 (The Knack, Blondie, The Cars, Pat Benatar) They're 30 years apart. And there's no comparison between them. They're from entirely different worlds. And that's today's alternative music vs. grunge.
