WLTW

Has 106.7 lite fm always been New Yorks Highest rated and Highest billing radio station. Even outside of the Christmas season

Only in the recent era has WLTW been at the top of most books in ratings. It is not generally the top biller, though (although it is always in the top 5 or 6 in the last several decades).

The highest billers in the last 20-some years have been WHTZ, WFAN, WCBS AM and WCBS FM as well as WLTW.

For the 1975 to 2002 numbers, look at this page: https://www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-Duncan-American-Radio/Duncan-1975-1992/New York.pdf

106.7 did not show until the late 70's, nearly 40 years after FM radio began in NYC.

Then again 106.7 was a jazz station, owned by the Riverside Church for the first 15 years of its existence. Sonderling bought it in 1975, and kept it jazz. They were bought by Westinghouse in 1978, and they flipped it to country in 1980.

I don't think Westinghouse ever owned that station. I believe Sonderling sold WRVR to Viacom, which made the poor decision to name a station in New York Kick FM (WKHK). It was also Viacom that later flipped the station to WLTW.

Do you mean since FM began during the early 1930s
or just since it moved to its current band in the late 1940s?
This is an important question :)

WLTW is a young 'un
WLTW was first licensed on March 16,1961 as WRVR. Construction permit granted to move to Empire State building on May 12, 1971

Yes, I was an engineer in Miami.

You are being excessively modest. I would insert "great" ahead of "engineer" and add "of a great station" after that!

Actual, the statement only applies to about 20% of the history of radio and less than a third of the history of FM.

David, thank you for the kind words. Speaking of engineers, during my interaction with them, New York City engineers were great to work with... proficient, professional and straight to the point. They face unique logistical realities in NYC and get the job done.

Are you saying that FM goes back to 1750 and AM goes back to 1570?

The original post suggests that the current name and format has been #1 during all the history of radio when it has only been in the format and top rated for the last quarter or less of radio’s history.

I think we can say Lite-FM has usually been among the highest rated stations in NYC for 20 years. In the last 10 years, it's been consistently #1, as well as tops in the 25-54 demo and the women 25-54 demo.

When it comes to revenue, as David says above, often it's NY's highest revenue station. Sometimes Z100, sometimes WFAN. WCBS 880 used to be up there too but has slipped to #4 or 5 in the last 10 years.

The chances are their chances are awfully good. :)
