NERW on WMEX's return date and programming

It does look like a very awkward placement in the picture. I wouldn't recommend it.

So I went back to look at that picture again, and there's a counter to Ed's right as he's standing at the console. Perhaps the turntables will go there.

That might be a better placement. Assuming he's doing a combo operation. Which he can't do for the two remote hosts.

The turntables were just placed non-operationally behind the board temporarily, pending some wiring work, and they were still there when the newspaper photographer for the linked article happened to visit. They have since been placed on the counter to the right of the console.

Makes sense. Will they be wired for remote start or will the operator have to keep the dust cover up and push the start switch on the turntable?

Come to think of it, the last time I used an SL-1200 configuration like this at a station (late 90s), we had remote start from the board and removed the dust covers. A quarter turn back of the album to cue 33rpm or a half-turn for 45rpm created a seamless start.

Joe will at least be bale to broadcast from his beloved Marshfield fair this summer and no doubt while he's there he'll remind the listeners how he used to work at WHDH OLDIES 103 WVBF, etc

Don't count on it.

I wouldnt bet on it either.. youre talking about DJ's who are stuck in the 60s and 70s and who think huge playlists and obscure stuff is the way to go

So it will be something like WLNG on Long Island used to be before the new ownership tightened things up and introduced newer classic hits to the format? That might be good for a shot of nostalgia every so often, but even if it throws in hokey elements like lost dogs and live reads of ads for mom-and-pop retailers, Boston is not Sag Harbor and it's difficult to see the station attracting much of an audience outside of mainly 60+ oldies geeks, and how many of those are there in the general population of any given market, as opposed to the small, unrepresentative sample one gets from this forum?

I have to state disagreement with one thing here. Local, well-produced, good sounding ads for local "mom and pop" retailers and agencies have kept Ed's longtime station WATD going for 40 years, like radio used to back when it was localized and great! I applaud Ed for local sponsorship, while the major Boston stations are courting national agencies (or their local chain branches) and have made their spots largely unaffordable to locals.

There ARE areas where "live and local" is still alive and well....
WLNG is proof that it CAN work.....IF you WORK AT IT!
The promos for various local advertisers on WLNG end with:"....working to grow your business....!"
People still like to hear their "friends" (local civic leaders, business owners, clergy, etc.) on the radio.....
WLNG's format obviously won't work in every market....but personally I enjoy hearing Ferlin Husky backed up with
the Beach Boys!! It's a "mix" that actually "fits" --- IF it's done right!!
If Ed follows WATD's legacy on WMEX......I see good things ahead!!:)
Anxiously awaiting the 23rd!!

But WLNG has been doing this for decades.. its easy to continue to build upon heritage.. hard to create it fresh these days.... especialyl when you have DJ's stuck in the 60s and 70s, not current day

So are you saying he shouldn’t even try it? It’s going to be an “oldies” station musically. You want DJ’s who know the music of the ‘60s and ‘70s since that’s mostly what they’ll be playing. It will be a niche audience who can no longer hear the music elsewhere on local terrestrial radio. A new CHR definitely wouldn’t work on AM up against “Kiss”, etc...

No, he should try it.. but all the oldies and radi ogeeks are thinking thats an automatic key to success and WMEX/WBMS are going to be wildly successful and hugely popular

Nobody will know if the station is successful or popular because Marshfield doesn't buy the ratings books. He sells his stations based on "results."

You're also dealing with DJ's who think obscure and stiff songs are the way to go and 5000 song playlists are successful

My question? How many "mom and pop" retailers are still open for business in the listening area? Last I checked, there's a "little" problem with places like Walmart and Amazon.

Just wait, some of those 45 rpm records will probably be the B-side.

And the DJs, like Joe... and Jimmy and Larry will be surprise when they have few listeners. only musicologists want to hear the b side BS, listeners wanna hear what is familiar
