Kenny Rogers dies at 81

I didn't pay attention that closely but America's Best Music seemed to be playing a lot of his songs. They could have been doing that anyway.

Not that I listen to them anymore, but some of his lower charting songs were good (at the time.)

But You Know I Love You (First Edition)
Sweet Music Man

Correct, Davis wrote that, as well as Elvis' hit "In the Ghetto." "Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me" introduced most Americans to Davis the singer.

Mac had intended Something's Burning for Elvis. But Elvis instead recorded Burning Love, written by Dennis Linde.

A wise decision. I wonder what singer "Burning Love" would have gone to otherwise. If both songs had been pitched to Elvis in anything approaching their finished form, it's hard to believe the decision could have taken very long. "Something's Burning" was a solid piece of work, but "Burning Love" had one of the all-time great grooves in rock history. It's hard to see Elvis having any more chart success with Davis' tune than Rogers wound up having -- it just wasn't that memorable a song.

Never really heard of Something Burning, even through of course Elvis Presley sang Burning Love, and I heard at the beginning he was not comfortable with singing the song, he did sing it on his tours in 1972, but had to refer to a lyrics sheet. Even through he sang the song in his Aloha From Hawaii Concerts, with no lyric sheet needed. Never heard if the song was intended for him or not, but Elvis did have a pretty good ear, and could tell a good song when he heard one.
