BTW Kenny did "Just Dropped In" on his farewell tour in 2017.
Yes, the First Edition was a completely different sound, and provided Kenny with his first hit. From psychedelic to country was probably a good move, but this song made #5 on the Billboard Chart in the spring of 1968.

Not long after the First Edition broke up, Rogers became friends with another band called Shiloh. He helped them get signed to a record deal and helped them with their songs. One of the guys in Shiloh was Don Henley, who went on to form The Eagles.

Kenny Rogers has the #1 and #2 songs on the iTunes chart today: The Gambler and Islands In The Stream.

Plus his Greatest Hits is the #1 album.
So which song is #1 and which one is #2?
Not that I listen to them anymore, but some of his lower charting songs were good (at the time.)
But You Know I Love You (First Edition)
Sweet Music Man
I also liked "Something's Burning"
As I recall that was written by Mac Davis....at a time when he was mainly known as a writer.
Correct, Davis wrote that, as well as Elvis' hit "In the Ghetto." "Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me" introduced most Americans to Davis the singer.
Mac had intended Something's Burning for Elvis. But Elvis instead recorded Burning Love, written by Dennis Linde.
The Gambler is #1 and Islands is #2 Although they've been flip-flopping.

Interesting stuff. I didn't know "Something's Burning" was written by Mac Davis and intended for Elvis.
