Feb 2020 Ratings

I think Seatown's point was that news radio stations were equally seeing an uptick in listeners as TV has seen audience increases. That isn't the case. Even the nations leader for news stations; WTOP, has seen their audience go poof in a very short period of time.

Continuing on what I was saying about the importance of personality: Seattle listeners will recall that a couple years ago, KNUC hired Tim Leary for their morning show. Unfortunately he didn't catch on in Seattle. But Hubbard transferred him to their station in West Palm Beach. He's become a hit there. He actually replaced Brooke & Jubal, and is getting better ratings there than they were. So last week, he made national news with this story:

How is their online audience doing? Before this, wtop.com was the #1 source for local news in DC, with more users than the TV stations.

The way it was explained to me; "it's like the earth suddenly opened up and swallowed all the listeners."

It would be interesting to compare that experience with WAMU. Or how KUOW compares now with KOMO. But sure Washington has great TV stations, and I could see the audience easily going there.

One of the problems I have with WTOP is their clock is very short, and they repeat and rotate stories very quickly. That works well for commuting, and works less for home listening. Unless you commute from Springfield to Silver Spring every day. They may want to look at adjusting their clock to fit the change in listening. It still may not help.

It's been a while since I've listened to WTOP, but KOMO is the same way. There have been times where I've turned them on but can't get out of bed for like two hours, by which time I've heard the same headlines 2-4 times, and even some f the same interviews.

I've always figured that All News stations were all about high Cume and low TSL. In that case, a tighter clock makes sense to me. KFWB in LA used to say, "Give us 20 minutes, we'll give you the world." So, if you listen for an hour, you'll get "the world" three times over.

Yep. The way news stations have always tried to improve TSL is by getting repeat visits several times a day. Whether the incidents are consecutive or separated, they count equally.

And, of course, a full 20 minutes would generally give a station a full two quarter hours of listening credit.

Isn't it "22 minutes"?

Yes, but that was the on-air positioning statement.

My point is that 20 minutes gives the station a full two quarter hours of diary credit no matter how it splits.

And, in fact, 5 minutes in one quarter hour and 5 in another gives a full half hour (two quarter hours) of credit. But, in the diary it was important to guarantee enough listening in two separate quarter hours to give a full 30 minute credit.

Of course, 3 minutes in one quarter hour, 15 in the next and 2 in the third only gets one quarter hour of listening credit in the diary.

They need to increase their ratings badly! Their morning show is great! Maybe go in an alternative rock direction or adult lean? They can't go in a rhythmic lean because they need to protect KUBE.

Changing formats is expensive and risky, usually following some serious research. Given our current environment, I seriously doubt most radio groups are spending much on research or considering changing formats. Unless of course, the station is going all Covid News..

Not the adult or alternative side.

What do you mean by "adult?" Don't you think The Sound covers adults? How about Adult Contemporary or Adult hits? Several stations with "adult" in the name.

If you want AAA, seems to me that's KEXP.

Kiss is already a 1 share station. They don't need to flip to an older skewing fringe format to do that.

AAA hasn't had much success in Seattle. KMTT (The Mountain) was a well-programmed attempt that fell apart once PPM was rolled out.

It's so common for hobbyists to feel that a station's eventual success or failure is solely driven by their personal taste(s).

That was at a time when that music was still popular, and the audience for it was still under 60. Not any more.
