Remember WRNB with studios in the Former Holiday Inn at the intersection of HWY 70 and 17

In New Bern??????? I think they had reverb

When was this? When I worked there very briefly in the late '70s they were on or just off of Glenburnie near Channel 12, Josh Humphries was PD and they had just put an FM on the air or just format changed it.

Not sure as I had moved on by then.Of course 99.9 VBS
is now Jammin 99.9.Many years passed from the days of WBBS and WVBS.
The original concept was to have VBS be the FM conterpart of BBS.

Did it go on to become B100 for several years, or was that somebody else?

Yes, VBS was know as B100 for a period of it's early life. B100 was also used in Greensboro in the 1990s by the Bernie Mann station at 100.3, now home to The Buzzard.

I picked up B-100 in the early 80s. I think I could also pick up WGNI.

Fast forward to the late '70's early '80'Jacksonville had a powerful country station WLAS 910 on the AM dial. I was a full time Marine and started as part time announcer. Our PD was John Lyes. M.D. was Willis Williams. Jerry Outlaw was boss man. We also had Lisa Hunter and the overnight guy was Big John (can't remember last name) Sidney and/or Itchy Popkins owned the station along with Boomtown Furniture. Any thoughts or info would be greatly appreciated. Greg Gardner aka The Gentle Giant of Jacksonville.

As I remember it, Sidney owned Boomtown and the radio stations, WLAS and WXQR and Itchy owned Furniture Fair. But who knows, maybe Itchy did have some ownership into the radio side.

Boomtown was down in the heart of town and Furniture Fair was and appears to still be out on Bells Fork Road. I also seem to recall the WLAS and WXQR studios were also on Bells Fork Road, closer to LeJeune Blvd than Furniture Fair.

Looks like WLAS is long gone and the AM is now WSRP. Looking at the 910 directional site on Google Earth, sure seems like a lot of tree growth on the property.

Long ago and far away, that site had a 5kW RCA Ampliphase, if I remember correctly. No idea what is out there now.

I don't recall WBBS, but your father's name sounds familiar to me. Did he teach "Broadcasting" at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC in the 80s?

Jim Kelso failed to give me my first job in radio at the old Miracle Theater (WFLB-Fayetteville) in 1964. Someone else gave me my first job a couple of days later. He was a great guy and a credit to the industry

Yep, the same Jim Kelso.

I knew Jim from the WBBS days, when I also worked in Jacksonville, NC.

I changed jobs and moved to Greenville and then found out he and Charlotte had moved to Kinston. I saw him a few times after we reconnected.

He was a good man.
