WTOV NBC 9 in Steubenville, OH/Wheeling, WV had quite the situation tonight. They aired a local high school football game under Sinclair's "Thursday Night Lights" moniker, scheduled from 7:00-9:30 PM Eastern, which would pre-empt Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, The Wall, and Law & Order: SVU. By their original schedule, Jeopardy! was moved to 9:30 (game time permitting), The Wall was bumped to 2:06 AM (replacing the encore of Hoda & Jenna), L&O: SVU to 3:06 (replacing Just for Laughs Gags and part of Early Today), and Wheel was gone entirely.
Just as the third quarter was about to start, the game was stopped due to lightning and a downpour. According to high school football rules, when lightning is spotted, 30 minutes must pass before play can resume. If another flash of lightning happens during that time, the "countdown" is reset to another 30 minutes. WTOV filled the delay by airing Jeopardy! at about 8:25. The game was still on pause, so Wheel of Fortune ended up airing after all, at around 8:55. WTOV returned to the field afterwards, and showed various highlights from other Sinclair "Thursday Night Lights" games until it was safe for the game to resume.
WTOV continued to air the game past 10:00, which meant pre-empting the RNC. Because of this, WTOV-DT2 FOX ended up carrying RNC coverage (in place of local news) even though they did not originally plan to. FOX was also scheduled to re-air the football game from 11:00 PM-1:30 AM. The game did not end until around 10:47 PM, over an hour later than scheduled thanks to the weather delay, and NBC's coverage of the RNC was JIP'd at 10:50.
