Star Announcement at 3PM

Star 94-1 has been teasing an announcement at 3PM today.

Don't teased announcements tend to be more about new contests or new promotional tie-ins than actual news like format flips or changes to the timeslots that matter (drive times), which tend to come out of the blue?

You're probably right in most cases, but when Cumulus was changing 101.5 from Kicks to New Country, they aired such an announcement. In fact, their announcement ended with a howling wolf to make (primarily) radio people think the station would be called The Wolf.

I'd like to solve the puzzle: "Rhythm"

Looks like it'll be Rhythmic AC. Go figure.

Unless this is all a red herring, but that's unlikely.

So, they dropped the “.1” from their branding and flipped to Rhythmic AC. I was definitely expecting them to go “Big” with this format shift.

Music sounds pretty good (it's like you're high on caffeine and sugar) but the voiceover guy is awful! So flat and boring! He doesn't go with the new Rhythmic AC format at all. Plus they need to add some imaging and sweepers.

Anyone else think this is kind of a bad idea? I mean, it seems like everytime a station tries rhythmic-AC, it always morphs into something else within a year. Even KTU in New York didn't stay rhythmic-AC for very long. Then iHeart Atlanta tried this format on WWVA "105-7 The Groove" and it quickly shifted to Rhythmic/CHR in no time. Of course, that was on a far weaker signal from Canton… 20kw I think. But now... rhythmic-AC on full power signal? Unless I'm missing something, I just don't know.

I was surprised when they didn't go this route last fall. Rhythmic AC is a logical format hole in Atlanta. Entercom is having great success with this format at KTWV in LA. It's #2 there, and it has potential to do the same in Atlanta. It fits where music is right now.

I'm also noticing they're still playing Kelly Clarkson, Harry Styles and Ava Max. So really the only thing that's changed is that they've added some 80's a little more old-school hip-hop. Interesting mix to say the least.

There are gigantic differences between the stationality and song categories when one compares 94.7 The Wave to Star 94.

Star 94 is significantly closer to 97.7 The Beat in Boston (iHM owned), which has proven to be a gigantic dud!

I personally like stations with this type of playlist, but as noted earlier, the format usually has a short shelf life. iHM used to have stations with this format not only in Atlanta but also in Detroit, Philly, Norfolk, and probably a few more markets I am overlooking. More recently, the format could be found in Miami on 93.9 WMIA-FM. None of the above stations were big success stories.

Remember the rollout of the "Movin" brand? All were Rhythmic ACs, just like the new Star 94, at conception. Almost all of those stations saw mediocre ratings as Rhythmic AC outlets; some such as 99.7 in San Francisco and 92.5 in Seattle evolved into highly successful CHR/Pop stations.

Bonneville has also dabbled in the format in the past, although with more of a late 70s / 80s lean - 100.3 in Chicago being an example.

Again, personally speaking, I like the new playlist on Star 94. I wish the station well. However, if I were a betting man, I wouldn't expect much in the way of sustained ratings improvement.

I cannot help but wonder if rollouts of this format by Entercom in other markets will soon follow. Could Chicago or Miami be next?

The people calling the shots at Cumulus are fools if they do not flip 100.5 to Variety Hits soon. Talk about a massive format opening...

Branding too. KTWV is "The Soul of LA," while Star is "The Rhythm of Atlanta." Star is more AC. May be a gradual change in music.

How many times have they used "The NEW Star?"
