Social Media Executive Order

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...to-social-media-executive-order-idUSKCN25831P

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration has filed a motion asking a court to dismiss a lawsuit against the president’s executive order targeting social media companies, calling it a “profound misunderstanding,” according to a copy of the motion seen by Reuters.

The lawsuit was brought in June by the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), a Washington-based tech group funded by Facebook Inc, Alphabet Inc’s Google and Twitter Inc. It marked the first major legal test of President Donald Trump’s directive.

Trump issued an executive order in May against social media companies in an attempt to regulate platforms where he has been criticized, just days after Twitter took the rare step of fact-checking one of his tweets about mail-in voting. Trump threatened to scrap or weaken a law known as Section 230, which protects internet companies from litigation over content posted by users.

The lawsuit by CDT argued Trump’s social media executive order violates the First Amendment rights of social media companies, will chill future online speech and reduce the ability of Americans to speak freely online.

Here is an update on the Social Media order.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Beginning Thursday, U.S. Facebook users who post about voting may start seeing an addendum to their messages — labels directing readers to authoritative information about the upcoming presidential election.

It’s the social network’s latest step to to combat election-related misinformation on its platform as the Nov. 3 election nears — one in which many voters may be submitting ballots by mail for the first time. Facebook began adding similar links to posts about in-person and mail-in balloting by federal politicians, including President Donald Trump, in July.

These labels will link to a new voter information hub similar to one about COVID-19 that Facebook says has been seen by billions of users around the world. The labels will read, “Visit the Voting Information Center for election resources and official updates.”

Telecom giant AT&T plans to push for changes to a federal law that protects companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter from liability for users' posts.

“There is no longer any reason that the nation’s most powerful online platforms should enjoy legal immunities unavailable to similarly-situated traditional companies,” AT&T Executive Vice President Joan Marsh said Monday in a blog post.

Marsh says AT&T plans to file comments urging the Federal Communications Commission to attempt to limit web companies' legal protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. That law currently immunizes websites from civil suits based on material posted by users.

In a way, AT&T is also protected from similar content-based lawsuits. If someone threatens me over the phone, I can't sue AT&T. The phone is considered a common carrier. In a way, the internet is no different from a phone. Internet sites shouldn't be held liable for content they don't create.

CHICAGO (AP) — Facebook and Twitter promised to stop encouraging the growth of the baseless conspiracy theory QAnon, which fashions President Donald Trump as a secret warrior against a supposed child-trafficking ring run by celebrities and government officials, after it reached an audience of millions on their platforms this year.

But the social media companies still aren’t enforcing even the limited restrictions they’ve recently put in place to stem the tide of dangerous QAnon material, a review by The Associated Press found. Both platforms have vowed to stop “suggesting” QAnon material to users, a powerful way of introducing QAnon to new people.

But neither has actually succeeded at that.

Here is the fallout of how Social Media is responding to Qanon.

Once the FBI labeled QAnon as a "domestic terrorist organization", that's put pressure on social media companies like Facebook and Instagram where QAnon has been allowed to incubate. Reddit has allowed them to hang around, but have been posting warnings about QAnon's crazy conspiracy theories as being nothing more than destructive and inflammatory falsehoods.

The Federal Trade Commission’s staff have made a recommendation to the agency’s commissioners on whether to file an antitrust complaint against Facebook, three people familiar with the agency’s probe said Thursday — a potential new milestone in Washington’s fight to rein in Silicon Valley.

The FTC’s five commissioners met to discuss a potential case Thursday afternoon, though a final decision isn’t expected for several weeks. The people discussing the case did not know whether the staff recommended suing the social network, which has faced criticism for its privacy practices and acquisitions of smaller rivals.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because of the confidential nature of the probe. Facebook declined to comment and the FTC didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Thursday’s meeting came two days after the Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google, and as coalitions of state attorneys general are weighing whether to bring their own complaints against the search giant. Facebook — with more than 2.2 billion users worldwide — ranks second behind Google in claiming a share of revenue from the online advertising market.

How that would accomplish a goal of force-feeding Breitbart to every user I don't know. People were free to use Ello, Google Plus and a couple of others but didn't.

If some of these folks get their way, your Facebook feed will consist of Nigerian princes, Bogus Kroger coupons, every conspiracy theory in the world, and comments that say "my brother-in-law's second cousin twice removed sister's boyfriend makes $1117.79 a day in his underwear"

It's time to ditch FB. Never been on it and never will...

I did in 2019 and at least I am out of the President's reach

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/02/technology/facebook-twitter-youtube-election-day.html

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook, YouTube and Twitter were misused by Russians to inflame American voters with divisive messages before the 2016 presidential election. The companies have spent the past four years trying to ensure that this November isn’t a repeat.

They have spent billions of dollars improving their sites’ security, policies and processes. In recent months, with fears rising that violence may break out after the election, the companies have taken numerous steps to clamp down on falsehoods and highlight accurate and verified information.

We asked Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to walk us through what they were, are and will be doing before, on and after Tuesday. Here’s a guide.

Here is Social Media talking about their plans in the 2020 elections.

I agree. Facebook has turned from a cute way to connect with family and friends, to a cesspool of nutty people, misinformation, conspiracy theories, and foreign-bot-generated trash. Younger people abandoned FB years ago. Now it's mainly occupied by your Aunt Selma and crazy Uncle Bob.

I've always recognized the privacy and security vulnerabilities with that site, and have stayed away from it entirely.

Now the Senate have a hearing over how Twitter and Facebook leaders handled the election security.

WASHINGTON (NewsNation Now) — Senators grilled the CEOs of Facebook and Twitter on their companies’ actions around the closely contested election between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified via video at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday.

Republican senators questioned Dorsey and Zuckerberg for what they considered to be censorship of Trump and his allies. Meanwhile, Democrats turned their focus to claims that the president and his supporters spread misinformation.

Both platforms have placed misinformation labels on some of the president’s content. Most of the flagged posts were Trump’s assertions linking voting by mail to fraud.

And now an antitrust investigation is being held against facebook inc.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government and 48 states and districts sued Facebook Wednesday, accusing it of abusing its market power in social networking to crush smaller competitors and seeking remedies that could include a forced spinoff of the social network’s Instagram and WhatsApp messaging services.

The landmark antitrust lawsuits, announced by the Federal Trade Commission and New York Attorney General Letitia James, mark the second major government offensive this year against seemingly untouchable tech behemoths. The Justice Department sued Google in October for abusing its dominance in online search and advertising — the government’s most significant attempt to buttress competition since its historic case against Microsoft two decades ago. Amazon and Apple also have been under investigation in Congress and by federal authorities for alleged anticompetitive conduct.

James noted at a press conference that “it’s really critically important that we block this predatory acquisition of companies and that we restore confidence to the market.”
