Entercom to Purchase 103.9 WPHI- Simulcast KYW

Wow! Didn't expect this. What I also see is this is part of a multiple station deal. That should be very interesting.

Entercom, KYW Newsradio’s Philadelphia-based parent company, will acquire WPHI-FM from Maryland-based Urban One as part of a transaction involving stations in multiple markets, Entercom announced Thursday.

There has been some talk about KROI in Houston, for example. What is Entercom giving up?

Entercom has to be thrilled to be getting out of Charlotte. Not a very profitable market for them. This really beefs up Urban One in Charlotte.

Similarly Urban One has struggled in Philly, and this gives KYW a new lease on life.

I had a feeling WTEM in DC wasn't going to last long with Urban One.

Would Radio One Philly will ''Kill off'' The Hip Hop format at WPHI?

It's already determined that Hip Hop 103.9 will be dead, and KYW will simulcast on 103.9

Whether Hip Hop moves to a different frequency? Classix 107.9 seems to be their best performing station, so MAYBE on 100.3? But no guarantee. I think Power 99 will have the Hip Hop format to themselves.

They sold the station and the format will not continue on WPHI as that station will become the FM of KYW.

And, of course, Urban One might adjust the flavoring of the remaining stations to better fit the younger and older African American and rhythmic listener groups.

They have a problem, but this keeps the cash flow TDY contributes, so there’s that. When something new presents itself they have the ability to jump on it should it make strategic sense. Maybe even solve more than one problem, or at least try to.

I wonder what in the wide world of sports Urban One is going to do with WBT.

That was my first thought too. KROI in Houston was kind of a disaster and they don't have any experience running conservative newstalk that i know of. However, the quote from Liggins seems to suggest they are excited to be acquiring general market formats in Charlotte.

Today's deal sure has the attention of those of us in Houston, where Radio One's KROI has been the ratings failure of their three station cluster (siblings KMJQ and KBXX do quite well.) I've been beating the drum for several years on the Houston board for Entercom to buy KROI and simulcast their AM SportsTalker (KILT 610.) What is more interesting is that iHeart also has an AM SportsTalker in Houston which could use an FM outlet. Alfred Liggins could have a bidding war if he wanted, I would think. Worth keeping an eye on this...dealing likely not finished yet.

While 103.9 is a weaker signal, it’s not obliterating any positive cash flow to put KYW on 103.9. From what’s been posted, TDY still outbills numerous stations with better ratings, including 104.5, so it’s still likely bringing in some positive value.

I wonder if they will pull out altogether, although they fought to have a Philly market presence, they never set the world on fire since blowing up two good Alternative and one traditional mom and pop signal, this is not Baltimore/DC much different tastes in music. I wonder what will become of WIP HD2 which might have a bigger signal than 103.9.

Entercom isn't buying much these days, especially large purchases. Also, Entercom already own five FMs in Houston so they could not buy KROI even if they had the cash. iHeart only owns three FMs, so they could, but would they for KBME? I doubt it.

KHMX, KILT, KKHH and KLOL. What is the fifth?

The problem is the partial-market coverage of KROI.
