Radio One

Baltimore might be the only market where Radio One does well in. They aren't doing to well in philadelphia and atlanta. They were wise to sell WPHI

Hey, take a look at how they do in ratings and revenue in Houston.

In Atlanta, their revenue is tied with iHeart. They are #3 billing cluster in Cleveland. In Atlanta they do as well as iHeart. And so on. They generally perform well, even where they have inferior technical facilities.

Another thing I noticed is that WUSL and WDAS do well in the Allentown area

So? There is no revenue for them in that market.

And WDAS average around a 1 share or below in Allentown, while WUSL dose mid-1 share averages. That is not "Well". That is market #75.

WDAS shows in Wilmington, Atlantic City and Trenton, too. WUSL also shows in Monmouth and Lancaster. But they can not monetize those results, either. Nobody in a smaller market will pay Philadelphia rates for small market listening.

I’m assuming cumulus gets most of the billing in the Allentown to market

Between Cumulus and iHeart, they take 92% of the A-B-E market revenue.

Remember hat all the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton stations together billed last year only slightly more than the single top biller in Philly did.

Well, two out of three for Radio One in Houston isn't bad. Urban AC KMJQ has been a huge success in the format for over 40 years. And Rhythmic CHR KBXX has been solid for almost 30 years. However both stations have declined recently; KBXX has heavy competition now from iHeart's KQBT, and the KMJQ numbers are somewhat down lately--not sure where those listeners have gone as they have no direct competitor. Audience getting old?

The failure has been the third RO station, KROI, which has horrible numbers (in the zeroes) for its CHR format. Big issue is that there is too much musical overlap with several other stations doing similar things with much better signals. Thus all the speculation on the Houston board about a format flip or sale.

Then again they had format exclusivity when the station was all news, and that wasn't much better.

As our friend David Eduardo has pointed out, all news tends to do badly in sunbelt markets, with the exception of KNX, which is a legacy station.

KROI's best overall numbers were with the "Praise" format from 2006-11, but apparently the audience was too old and thus not advertiser friendly.

And KNX significantly under-performs KCBS and even did so when KCBS was AM-only. It's still a valid format, but in 25-54 is is declining. KNX is 26th in 26-54 in the last book.

Yes, the combination of being religious and being old-leaning was a double whammy.
