why can't 94.5 be more like 92.7?

Best local station I enjoyed listening to by accident - Goddard's Gold on Sunday with Petula Clark and Cher "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" and so much more? YES PLEASE :)

Why, oh, why can't 94.5 play any of this - notwithstanding if it gets played on a Best Of AT40 - instead of that 90's alt-"mold" garbage?

92.7 really is that good. Props to Goddard et al. Keep up the great work.

WHy do you want 2 stations to be similar? then youd claim one station is copying the other and there's a format hole for an fm station in phoenix playing only male rock n roll artists from the 70s or something.

Plus, Hubbard which owns 92.7 is maybe a bit different then iheart.... hubbard isnt about branding and saving every penny then can.... iheart just standardizes across everything.. i can see hubbard maybe taking more of a chance... plus it doesnt cost as much to operate 92/7/1440 as it does a big fm station. profit margins .. whats profitable to hubbard may not be to iheart

92.7 kinda sorta compliments KSLX format wise.

And theres not enough room for two similiar stations that lie, revenue wise, in a market

uhhh..maybe because KOOL doesn't want to be a 1.7 share station? Just a wild ass guess.

Or maybe because KOOL bills more than fifteen times higher than the "Home of the Clock Timer" (c)

"Any of this" appeals to people in their 60s and 70s and not to the ages that advertisers most often seek. That is why in 25-54 (the range where most transactional ad buys focus) KOOL averages around a 4 share and KAZG is around a 0.3.

I don't want two stations to be similar. Just the opposite. It's embarrassing listening to 93.3 - they play 99% of what's on 94.5. Ergo:

Green Day - both 93.3 and 94.5
Nirvana - both 93.3 and 94.5
Violent Femmes (surprisingly enough) - both 93.3 and 94.5

94.5 doesn't play Billy Eilish - yet. Give 'em time & she'll be on rotation there faster than you can say Miley Cyrus.

We've reached a point where what was once alternative could now be classified as oldies. All three of those bands have been around for 30 years.

It's like playing Love Me Do or Day Tripper in the 90s.

Petula Clark is like playing Bing Crosby in the 90s.

Bing's going to be on plenty of '20s stations over the next month and a half!

Lamptimer, David.. lol.. one of the longest threads on this website devoted to one singular radio station :)

I stand corrected... at sunset every day, pus or minus about 30 minutes.

The differences are much greater per BDS.

And with any two similar stations, it is what each plays that the other does not that defines them.

Today's 12 noon hour on 93.3 (sorry for the terrible formatting, copied and pasted from BDS):

12:57PM Today Smashing Pumpkins
12:53PM Can I Call You Tonight? Dayglow
12:49PM Gives You Hell All-American Rejects
12:46PM Cradles Sub Urban
12:38PM Monsters All Time Low Feat. Blackbear
12:35PM Thnks Fr Th Mmrs Fall Out Boy
12:30PM Bitter Sweet Symphony Verve
12:28PM Mood 24kGoldn Feat. Iann Dior
12:24PM Time To Pretend MGMT
12:21PM I Think I'm OKAY Machine Gun Kelly X Yungblud X Travis Barker
12:18PM Trampoline SHAED
12:09PM Hallucinogenics Matt Maeson
12:06PM Steady, As She Goes Raconteurs
12:02PM Crawling Linkin Park

I only see 2 songs that might have a slim chance of a spin on KOOL (Bitter Sweet Symphony and Today) but most likely don't show up over there. Perception is reality to you and that's fine. The fact is plenty of people in the upper "alt" demo of 18-49 don't get all upset hearing a 90's monster hit from when they were in high school alongside newer stuff. And the younger part of the demo absolutely knows these 90s records and responds positively to them or they wouldn't be there. Hubbard does a TON of research. Is it new and cutting edge? Absolutely not. It's an alternative hits format targeted at passive listening, not people who still spend every weekend perusing whatever may have shown up at their local Zia this week.

Always wanting to hear "oh wow" records is not a recipe for success in a PPM world. It's a recipe for that aforementioned 1.7...or worse (see KOAI)

Let me start out by saying that Goddard is a great guy. Real class act. And no, I'm not gonna say "but..." and proceed to cast aspersions on him. He's very good at what he does, and I wish him the best.

I also have 92.7 as a preset in my car. I have transcended the 25-54 demo as of this year, and enjoy listening to "oldies" as a result.

Yet I understand the reality of the situation. KOOL can't get ratings and revenue targeting people like me and Steve. They have to go after the audience for which the 90's are the "sweet spot." Their target audience is not the people who fondly remember the first time they heard the Beatles on the radio, but the people who remember the first time they heard Nirvana or Vanilla Ice. As kids.

Fun story...about 16 years ago I was driving with my daughter in the car. Being a teenager, she was punching the seek button on the radio and it came to rest on KZZP when they used to play "Flashback Friday" with artists like Boyz II Men and such. She said "cool! Dad, they're playing oldies!"

She's in her 30s now. Those are still "oldies" for her. If KOOL segued into Petula Clark she'd tune away immediately...if she even listened to terrestrial radio but that's another discussion for another time. Oldies 92.7 is her grandma's station. That's the reality.

All is forgiven as the Lamptimer was retired when Gumpdusky coughed up the coin to replace that old POS xmttr with a Nautel which allowed KAZG to remain on at night. No more yanking the carrier at sunset, or popping back on at sunrise...give or take 30 minutes. With the Nautel, Lumberyard 14~Forty is kickin' out the oldies 24/7. But it's a mystery to Nurse Jeff and me as to what happened to the Lamptimer...and we're also wondering what happened to Edd Byrnes' comb?

I work at a classic rock station. A few years back after a music test came in, my cell phone rang.

"Hey, it's (operations manager). I'm here with (general manager), (sales manager) and (assistant PD). We need you to help us settle something. How old are you?"

46

"What do you remember about the first time you heard 'Under The Bridge'?"

I think I was a sophomore in college, and I heard it while driving to class.

"See! I told you. Thanks, you've been a big help."

Sometimes we need to remember that the 90's weren't *that* recent.

Does it make you feel old when someone like the original poster refers to the station as "92.7" and doesn't know the ancient lore relating to Ancient Modulation KAZG and its ancient equipment? So prosaic.

I'm coming to town next month (assuming that it's not a pandemic hellscape) and I kind of want to have lunch on the banks of the canal in the shadow of the lamptimer just because I can.

Contact our Appointments Director at the Media Hut and we'll meet you there. A canal side oil change for the Gremlin with an extra hand sounds like a plan!
