Howie Carr WRKO

Speaking of Newsmax...... Anyone else having trouble seeing it on their cable system?

Comcast/Xfinity keeps telling me it's part of my package...but it doesn't come up when I flip by the channels.

(When I called tech support, they offered to 'send a technician to the house'. I didn't think it was that big a deal for the hassle.)

That was happening in my house until I removed the channel filter that my wife set up so that flipping through channels would skip past it. Maybe something similar on your end?

Howie has been broadcasting from Florida for most of the fall. He was broadcasting from Newsmax studios until this week. Still no word as to what's going on with Newsmax.
If you look at Tweets and Replies in his Twitter feed, lots of people have been asking, but nobody's gotten an answer.

Howie could be doing the show from Florida. The other day he had a phone interview with I believe a gym owner in New Jersey.Tech problem--listeners could still hear the guest talk but Howie
couldn't. Howie said maybe they could have the
man call in later.Taylor Cormier _could_ hear the caller and jumped in to ask questions.
Taylor most likely in Boston while Howie in
what Rush would call The Southern Command.
I realize IP links are the way to go in broadcasting these days, but, dang, the production and technical quality they render - to me, at least - is just not there yet.

In the days of "Entercom happens" they didn't keep having the same kind of trouble that they have now.

When Howie was working directly for Entercom, I believe he did his daily broadcast from 'RKO's studios. When he left Entercom and started self-syndication, I think that's when his technical issues multiplied. So I don't think either Entercom or iHeart is at fault here. Few broadcast operations, let alone an individual talk show host - and a successful one at that - can afford an expensive high-quality (read "NON-AoIP") link for off-site program origination. And that's most unfortunate for the listeners (those who care, at least).

When was the last time you walked into a bank? When you do, take a look around. How many bodies do you see in offices or behind the counter? Know what happened to them? ATMs. Do mistakes happen at banks because they're so dependent on computers? Let's just say it's a different kind of mistake.

What you're talking about isn't strictly a radio problem.

A good AoIP link is absolutely fine for a talk show. If you can afford a producer, you can afford a quality AoIP device.

I was not impressed with Howie's performance or the production value on Newsmax. Who wants to watch a guy reading long newspaper stories by his favorite conservative writers.

Yes I know he is a Boston institution and his show has done well for stations in New England but Howie has failed more times than I can count.

When he was denied a column at the Herald and the Globe was uninterested in hiring him, he made the move to Ch. 7 with limited success. He jumped back to the Herald after he was given a column . A regular feature with Jerry Williams enabled him to land his own radio show on the old 850AM with Victoria Jones. He did some TV at Ch 56 and a very short stint at Ch. 2. ABC Radio tried to syndicate him without success followed by John Garabedian's company. Neither company could not clear him out of New England. His first book on the Bulgers was excellent, the rest in my opinion were so so. Yes he sells his books at Market Basket and clothing with the Triple O's logo the bar where Whitney raped underage girls. I grew tired of his act years ago and anyone who spends $3.00 to read his Herald column must have money to burn. Most people mellow a little when they age and Howie has certainly done better than he expected but I find him to be nastier now than when I first met him back in 1981.
Just my opinion nothing else.

Speaking of Jerry I believe Bob Katzen will interview Tolz and Elman, former producers and
authors of Burning Up the Air--Jerry's bio--
tonight (Sun 12-20) 6 to 8 pm on WMEX 1510.

...though I just heard emergency fill in Joe McMillan say Tina Louise would be on...
Oops! Now I see. Tolz and Elman will be on DEC 27
Bobby Katzen's special guests on Sunday, December 27 at 7 p.m. on WMEX will be Alan Tolz and Steve Elman, co-authors of “Burning Up the Air,” the definitive biography of Jerry Williams - one of the world’s most famous radio talk show hosts of all time. And there will be a special live appearance by the original, the one and only “Grace, Queen of the Cockamamies.” Steve Elman tracked her down for us. Grace is an icon who was a regular featured caller on Jerry’s show and is kn…

Great news....it's about time that air head is gone from howie's show.....yeah yeah, she brings in young conservatives...bla bla bla...I can't stand her. I wonder if she's the reason Steve left? At least now Taylor will be able to get a word in here and there!
I used to listen to Carr once in awhile but I couldn't stand Grace so I tuned out. She sounds like a high school student giving a commencement address. Not only that, but every time there was a titillating story Grace would read it while the old man chuckled and made comments. It was creepy.

I'm not sure what the genre of conversation is going to be for her show. However, if it involves anything political, it is going to be extremely difficult for people to take her seriously IMO. Her claim to fame seems to be going to Providence College (not sure what degree she got), being in the college drama group, and then holding a string of seemingly unrelated and meaningless jobs (like we all do when we're in college) until landing her current position as "executive producer", according to her linked in profile.

Some of this undoubtedly is due to her age, and the fact she's worked for Carr for 6 years (since she graduated from college, more or less), so she hasn't had an opportunity to really work in "the industry" at several jobs with progressively more responsbility. I'm not exactly sure what "industry cred" or "street cred" she brings to the table (when it comes to political talk, at least).

At least someone like Sandy has been around for well over a decade, is an attorney, has hosted her own show (for a while at least) and guest-hosted for others (VB/Kuhner) while they've been on vacation, so she brings something to the table.

Grace also has that annoying millennial habit of accentuating the last word in her sentence (uptalk) and periodic vocal fry.

It should be interesting to see where she takes her show. As noted, she doesn't have the background that Howie (or for that matter, his former producer Steve) has. I also suspect she has too kind a heart to go for the jugular on local politicians, etc.

That said, she has been involved with show prep and booking guests for some time, and is decent at interviewing guests. I don't know if she'll bring back the millennial airhead persona, but if last week was any indication, she probably won't.

I plan to give it a few chances to see if it's worth listening to.
