KYND Back on air?

Is KYND doing anything ? It seems like a waste ever since it was upgraded a couple years ago. How is the licensee able to keep their license when they are not serving the COL

My understanding has always been that the station belonged to the father of the current owners and they inherited the station and haven’t done much besides completing the upgrade to 25 kW a couple years back. I believe one or maybe both are doctors with their practice so the station can just sit there. Correct me if I’m wrong Bill.
 
Matt Provenzano actually located the land and had the engineering work completed to move KYND to the new site and upgrade to 25kw after purchasing the Hallettsville AM at 1520 and moving it to Stockdale (locating the land there as well) and getting construction started at both locations. He filed and got the CPs. While construction was happening in the early stages, Matt was diagnosed with cancer. It took his life in under a year. Work on the upgrade began before Matt passed but much of the physical work came following his death.

Upon Matt's death, the station went to his son, the doctor and his daughter. Needless to say the son is far too busy with his practice to devote much time to the station. It is my feeling the daughter wants to retain the station as her dad wanted the station to remain with the family. As I understand it, when KYND his the financial issues of zero billing, it was the daughter that would want it to continue but the son has the cash to make it happen. If you think from Mark's shoes, you wouldn't want to bother with the station nor throw money at it when you are already devoting most of your waking hours working in your practice. Of his little amount of time, the cost in time and dollars to create a payback is so high with KYND, he can invest fewer dollars and less time on many other much more significant investments that have greater potential.

I can say Matt was one of the finest people I ever met. I have a very high opinion of my dad but I'd rank Matt right up there as equal to my dad. If you find anyone that worked for him, I think you'd get a similar opinion of Matt as a person.
 
Wanted to update this thread. I was in Houston over the weekend and heard the "Bill Turner" appeal loop yesterday afternoon (11/22/2020) on 1520 KYND. If they weren't getting any serious lessees a year or 18 months ago, it seems kind of remote they will get one in the current climate. I'm not sure if the loop runs continuously for months on end or if it is just a week or day at a time. If it is continuous, it's probably in the ballpark of $1,500 just for the electricity to blast out that loop each month (depending on the transmitter type and if they are on Oncor or a co-op).
 
Yes, the famous Bill Turner loop lives on at KYND to echo around the world. Every month or so, I call the advertised phone number 281-373-1520 and sure enough, the response is . . . "We're sorry, this number has been disconnected or is no longer in service."
It boggles the mind to understand what the purpose is of broadcasting, day-in and day-out, a contact number that doesn't exist. No wonder prospective clients avoid KYND, since they cannot reach anyone to discuss a contract. It's an ongoing waste of electricity, so the only satisfied party is the power company.
As Seinfeld used to say, "What's wrong with these people anyway?"
 
Amazing! I have been at my new job since May 2019 and they're still running my CDs. I really wish they wouldn't keep airing those since my name is attached to it, but what else do they have. There's no studio and no employees. You have to wonder why it hasn't dawned on them that nobody is calling and check the 281-373-1520 number to see if it works. They provided my phone, the cheapest from Walmart where we had to buy minutes ever so often. They know you have to buy minutes every few months. I've heard the number has not been in service well over a year. It's sad. The station, while never a contender in Houston, used to make a little money and provide a service to segments of Houston for a couple of decades or so. Today it runs a 2 year old CD in a CD tray of a computer next to that nice Nautel transmitter. It's good Matt has passed. It would pain him to see where KYND finds itself.

After they ran out of money and quit paying me, I suggested running Faith Comes By Hearing audio Bibles (orchestrated with a cast of voices in every day English) and ask for donations. I figured at least some money would come in and it would never need updating. They could quit paying music licensing fees at least. I figured some people would send in, say $10 a month. At least that could pay some bills especially if we sent out a few press releases. They didn't think as optimistically as I did. I had broadcast permission and we had several Bible versions.

Maybe they'll just take a CD with an hour-long track with a legal ID and plug the National Weather Service in for the audio. That might not be easy sitting under those 3 towers north of Pattison, however. Pretty much anything that costs money isn't going to happen.

I feel for them. They're nice people but certainly not radio people, not in the least.
 
I gave up on KYND a year ago. LOL it will actually surprise me if they get off whatever they're smoking and actually run it successfully in future.

I gave up on their format of endless loops with disconnected phone numbers long ago. Shame it hasn’t cracked the Houston ratings, after all its on 24 hours a day a lot of the time.

This post is so full of spelling errors I'm surprised you're going after others in the San Antonio/Austin board who don't have perfect grammar.
 
I suspect someone who knew someone who knows how to reach the owners of KYND was told the ministry might be interested in the Houston market. Or a broker was contacting potential clients. That's how it normally works. It is a weakness in negotiating to be looking for a station and it is a weakness to need a client for your station. You can bet if a deal was done it sure wasn't at the monthly rates the owners demanded I get to lease the station when I was working for them. I contacted many ministries and you'd be surprised how many wanted you to donate the airtime or lease for a fraction of the monthly expenses (ie: I can pay you $5,000 a month, not $25,000). Legit ministries are typically not rolling in cash unless they have been around many decades and been the recipient of some estates of avid listeners.
