Marana's AM 580

What's up with KSAZ? I noticed that Radio Ebenezer was off the air on Sunday and Monday but back on the air on Tuesday. They were off the air again yesterday and were still off the air this morning. No carrier, no nothing.

With the exception of last Tuesday KSAZ has been off the air for over a week now. I was able to hear KUBC Gold out of Montrose CO on the car radio while driving through Sahuarita/Green Valley this morning around 8am.

It is now looking as though KSAZ will be off the air for a long time despite the fact that it has pretty close to the best daytime groundwave signal in Arizona. The night signal is quite another matter. Nearly a year ago a broker told me that KSAZ was for sale and it may be that it will remain silent until a buyer is located. Over a week ago I attempted to post the fact that a similarly programmed station, KEVT-1210, is off the air permanently but my post got censored. A reliable source tells me that KEVT's towers have been dismantled. The real estate was sold well over a year ago. There doesn't seem to be much profit in Spanish religion.

I often drive by the KEVT tower site so I'll take a look next time and report back.

Speaking of KSAZ I have heard them on the air the past two mornings but only before sunrise. Apparently they are now operating at night but not in the day! Weird.

Question. When 580's facilities were on N. Swan in Tucson, were they a daytime or full time operation?

When 580 was KCNA they were full-time. Not sure what they were after the call change. Another forum member posted long ago that those towers have been unused for many years.

KIKX was 24-hr. But, as CAVEMANage alludes to a couple of replies back, their nighttime signal was directional and left a lot to be desired in much of the Tucson area.

I drove by the KEVT 1210 transmitter site today which backs up to Nogales Highway. Although the building is still there, the two towers are gone!

It was way back in 1974 that I worked at KIKX-580 which had both the transmitters and studios at the Swan Road location. They had 5 kw non-directional in the daytime and 500 watts directional at night. After about two weeks I got fired for having an unprofessional attitude. The P.D. who fired me had recently performed a key role in the phony kidnapping stunt that eventually would cause KIKX to lose its license. The station went silent for several years and when a new licensee was found they resumed operations from Swan Road but they would get evicted. More silence while they looked for another location. Eventually they ended up in Marana with about 380 watts at night. Then the owner died causing more problems. And that's a little Tucson radio history for anyone who cares.

Sad to know. KCNA was my intro to radio when I was about 5 years old. I used to bicycle in the Catalina foothills and stare at those blinking towers thinking one day......

I tuned past 580 at about 5:10 p.m. Saturday and KSAZ was back on the air using the slogan "Radio Casa". About ten minutes later they were off the air and the station in Kansas was coming in with a sports report. One can only wonder if those in charge of KSAZ have a clue. Now just before 6 p.m. they are back on with a song about Cristo.

They are back but they have dropped Cristo. There doesn't appear to be much money in Spanish religion so they are trying the secular option. But they will have a hard time competing with the Spanish stations on FM, especially with the lousy night time signal. Very likely this new format won't last long.
