WOWO's nighttime null towards KEX, Portland, seems to me to be excessively deep. Perhaps there is an additional reason for such a deep null.
Unfortunately, the details and exhibits for the applications for 9.8 kW Night and 15 kW Night are not in the database. If anyone knows anyone in engineering at WOWO, they might be able to copy it for us without hundreds of dollars in copying fees.

I'm guessing WOWO may have actually aired "Kokomo" by The Beach Boys shortly before they went to oldies. They were still Top 40 in summer '88...

Too bad they didn't approve this 15 kW Night APP. It would have restored quite a bit of de facto skywave service. I'm not certain, but it may have had to do with interference with new Class Bs squeezed in because of the downgrade from Class A.

As I recall, WOWO was downgraded because they were purchased by the then owners of WLIB in New York, also on 1190 kHz. Or, am I mistaken on this story?

Inner City Broadcasting which owned WLIB bought WOWO just to downgrade it to class B so that WLIB could operate at night.

Earlier tonight local 820 KGNW went unexpectedly off the air... WBAP came in with readable S2-S4 signals with a talk show I hadn't previously heard before (perhaps a local DFW show?) and then Red Eye Radio. Some rock and pop was underneath (I'm guessing KWDP Waldport OR?) and what sounded like religious talk -- signals on those two stations were too low to be readable on my PR-D5.

I wonder, if they filed the appropriate paperwork, can WOWO go back to 50,000 watts at night if they wanted to?
I think it might be allowed under some newer proposed AM rules. Looks to me like they wouldn't presently be able to meaningfully upgrade without some rule relaxation because of restrictions toward WMUZ 1200 Taylor, MI. That's right toward Ft. Wayne. Although they relaxed the Night coverage requirement, which might allow further power increase, what's the point if it doesn't more solidly cover the Ft. Wayne Area?

KGNW-820 Seattle is off the air tonight for maintenance purposes. They were off last night as well, but I missed it last night. The dominant station on 820 is XEABCA Mexicali, La Voz Radio, playing Hot AC music (Capital Cities, Pink). WBAP is under them with Red Eye Radio......and not much else.

KJR-950 has also gone off the air for maintenance. Last night they were also off for a few hours, and Bruce Portzer in Seattle logged Radio Reloj in Cuba! Tonight it is a mix of XEKAM w/ Spanish talk, CFAM with classical and KTBR Roseburg OR with BBC News...their night power is 20 watts but I wonder if they've left their 3.4KW day power on.

Just logged KWDP-820 Waldport OR, running Standards, 15 watts 247 mi. Mixed w/ WBAP and someone else...it sounds like XEABCA faded down for a bit. I now hear them in the jumble. Not hearing CHAM ON.

Under proposed rules, I don't think WOWO would have to protect WMUZ (WCHB) 1200 on the first adjacent channel, but I don't think those are in place yet. I know of another owner who has been marking time waiting for the new rules to kick in. Several years ago, WRTO Chicago applied for an increase also, and in their Night interference study, it showed that WOWO at 9.8 kW was right up against the post to WMUZ (WCHB). The WOWO TL is SW of Ft. Wayne, and thus Ft. Wayne is NE of the TL, and so is WMUZ (WCHB).

There are some other Class B squeeze ins on 1190, but they might be able to protect those with a modified DA from the current WOWO site. I doubt that it would be economically feasible to find new land for a new TL more in line with the protection requirements.

Likely not, there are stations that came on since then, and the purpose of the power reduction was to allow WLIB, New York, night service. There's no need, really. WOWO serves Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana, and has a translator.

I heard snippets of music but conditions in my location weren't very good, mostly I'd hear WBAP fading up and out. No Spanish whatsoever.

WBAP, ~1,000 miles away, is reasonably easy for me to pull in the past few days, but I can’t seem to get XEABCA which is only ~200 miles away at all.

I loved hearing XEABCA when i lived in Southeast wyoming.. it was quite regularly and was VERY strong for only 3KW, I'd hear it after WBAP skywave disappeared. Here is an XEABCA legal id recorded in August 202019 at 602am in Wyoming, that I like to joke mentions everything including the location of the kitchen sink:

XEABCA would also regularly run several minutes of barnyard animal noise at 6am.. cows, pigs, etc.. just.. making their noise.

That's the second Spanish station I know that runs animal sound effects on a regular basis. KCHJ-1010 Delano CA is often heard with their El Gallito classic Regional Mexican format...and they often air rooster sounds!
