Dump fire on HD? KROI

Has KROI always been in HD too? Or did they turn it one today? I noticed today they had HD on.

Last time I recall hearing HD on 92.1 was during the Praise format, but it might have returned briefly in the Boom days. But yes, KROI is running HD at a 10:45pm check this evening. Audio is quite good. Only running HD-1, no additional subchannels. The station was only analog when checked on the HD radio in my wife’s car this past Monday evening.

Could this be the new transmitter site testing?

Just caught it this evening! 92.1 reads "KROI HD", just a single HD channel, and is pushing a clip art image of a broadcast tower as it's station logo. As opposed to the clunky/broken RDS that KROI was running last summer, the HD is perfectly feeding song/title/station name info.

Was driving along I-10 from Fry Rd into the Heights, and KROI sounded great and locked in HD throughout the ride. It's got to be the new tower.

At my check last night the KROI audio processing was quite nice, with a more detailed, spacious quality. I would guess it’s the new tower. I also noted the song/artist info.

Will be interesting to see if additional subchannels pop up...every commercial Houston FM currently running HD has them, with the exception of 97.1.

97.9 does technically have a subchannel but it’s dead air.

What could KROI add to HD2? La Mera Mera again? Or another Mega/LATINOMIX format?
Why do they have to add original programming? The station already performs poorly. Adding original programming to a subchannel will do more harm than good.

Offering space to the translators around town seems like the obvious choice. If I'm UrbanOne, I would snitch (via proxy of course) on translators that don't have parent stations and then offer them space on KROI. Sure, this is morally f***ed. But revenue is revenue. Fire up HD-2-3-4 and get at it. Make everyone in town legal and gain revenue. Everyone wins.

That assumes that the folks operating translators illegally have money to pay to get on a legal HD2, 3 or 4. I’m not convinced that KROI’s owner wants checks that bounce.

The moment the checks bounce, boot them out and become a persistent "snitch" to the FCC. Force the translators to do business with you or not do business at all. It's a weasel way of doing business, but revenue is revenue. This isn't the 90s anymore where stations can be picky about how or where the revenue is coming from.

There really isn't much to lose for UrbanOne here. It's clear UrbanOne isn't keeping RadioNow around for their ratings. So who cares if RadioNow loses listeners to a leased out KROI-HD4? If good ratings aren't the goal for RadioNow, then use the subchannels to make a few side bucks. Wouldn't cost more to set bandwidth aside for three extra subchannels.

I was wondering if they had launched the new tower, as I live in the northwest suburbs of Houston and have noticed a decent increase in signal strength in the recent days. Much less static and fading in and out.

Would assume they are on the new tower now, signal does indeed seem better from my location in south Montgomery County, too.

HD is very weak up here, though... couldn't pick up an HD carrier this morning until I hit I-45 South at SH-99.

I have noticed the same. I would even say that it is performing almost as good as KLGK around Conroe/Willis.

It's definitely not getting beat up by K222CX like it was last month around greater Spring. It seems like KROI is now giving K222CX a hard time.
