Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Also Michael,
Is there some way you could let your subscribers know what happened to me and where my videos can be found? Either that or Scott (ChenowethRules)? I don't know how many casual video watchers will be able to find the VHSgoodies library on Internet Archive...
Thanks :)

I hear ya. I gotta tell you. Internet Archive is making it hard to find videos these days. Finding them is like finding a needle in a haystack

Crainbebo, I just commented on your link on my pannoni8 YT home page. Most videos of these recordings described above are found in the VHS Vault collections. Individual user accounts can be accessed by clicking on the Uploaded By links at the bottom. I still recommend at least a little presence on YouTube since it provides a larger audience, and by doing so, provide your Archive link to discover more great content.

Until I get the appeal back, it's either gone forever or I am only getting two accounts back (channels 3 and 4). The takedown notice said, "you are hereby prohibited to create new accounts". It's kind of like when you are permanently banned for Community Guidelines (three strikes). The first channel is gone forever regardless due to three strikes. If I can 2/3rds of my presence back on YT, it will be a miracle. And if I do, I may be taking down other shows that could be questionable and getting those up to Archive. I just reached the 100 reuploaded-video mark on Internet Archive...
thank GOD for PowerDirector and for being able to compile the parts. No more 'part 7, part 8, part 9' - just one to two commercial videos at 10-15 min each, and voila! In the olden days, this was 225 videos, but now, it only takes 100 files. Fingers crossed. I did get an email from YouTube saying that my inquiry needed to go to a specific email address, so I will send the appeal to that address and hope for a response by next week.

If all else fails, keep moving those subscribers towards Archive, and thanks for your help.

Do you want any religious TBN recordings from 1992 and 1998?

Crainbebo, do you plan on doing anything with VHSgoodiesWA5? Man, I can't believe YouTube gave you such a raw deal there.

New finds from this weekend, four tapes found at an estate sale in Strongsville on Friday. One was an '80s stock tape largely taped over with 2000s kids' shows.
TAPE 1: Clip from Friday Night Slime Time on Nickelodeon on 11/18/2005; episode of The Wiggles and partial episode of The Koala Brothers taped from the Disney Channel (Playhouse Disney) in November 2005 with promos; partial episode of Spongebob Squarepants (during Friday Night Slime Time) and partial episode of Danny Phantom taped from Nickelodeon on 11/18/2005 with commercials; episodes of Higglytown Heroes, Shanna's Show and partial episode of JoJo's Circus taped from the Disney Channel (Playhouse Disney) in November 2005 with promos. Fuji T-120.

TAPE 2: Great Performances: Pavarotti Returns to Naples taped from WVIZ in Cleveland on 3/18/1988; Great Performances: Bernstein at 70 taped from WVIZ on 3/19/1989; partial episode of Crook & Chase (guest Crystal Gayle) taped from TNN in December 1988 minus commercials. Scotch T-120.

TAPE 3: Good Morning America on location in Iceland and start of The Geraldo Rivera Show taped from WFTV in Orlando on 5/16/1997 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 4: Partial broadcast of News Chat taped from MSNBC on 5/15/1998 with commercials; partial recording of Sinatra: Concert for the Americas (1982 PBS special) taped from WMFE in Orlando on 5/16/1998; partial broadcast of Time & Again (a special episode on Frank Sinatra) taped from MSNBC on 5/16/1998 minus commercials. Maxell T-120.

Also, at a garage sale in Bath Township (outside of Akron) earlier today, I picked up three recorded audiocassettes. One of the three had various songs recorded from WWPW Power 99 (now WWWQ Q99.7) in Atlanta in 1991, while the other two were mixtapes of songs copied from other tapes, records or CDs. Some DJ banter is included in between a few of the songs. Whoever recorded this taped some of the songs more than once (e.g. "Love of a Lifetime" by Firehouse, "Too Many Walls" by Cathy Dennis and "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" by Bryan Adams).

Other songs on the cassette include:
Natural Selection featuring Niki Harris--Do Anything
Extreme--Hole Hearted
Boyz II Men--Motownphilly
Color Me Badd--I Adore Mi Amor
Amy Grant--Every Heartbeat
Seal--Crazy
Jesus Jones--Right Here, Right Now
Extreme--More Than Words
The Escape Club--I'll Be There
Lenny Kravitz--It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

Scott, I can't access 'channel 5'. Because my use of YouTube was terminated, I cannot access that account and I get a redirect message from Google when I try to.
As of tonight, no messages from YouTube regarding the appeal. Hoping for something next week. In the meantime, my Archive channel is open for business and the ex-YouTube videos are being dumped there as we speak. Depending on the appeal verdict, I may have to move everything over there (from both channels 3 and 4). That's if YouTube comes back saying "after review, we're keeping you terminated because who cares about the hard work and time you've spent archiving Yakima TV history...we hate you!"

As for your finds, I have the GMA from the day prior, where they visited Helsinki, Finland. After they came back to New York, I believe ABC put a highlight reel on home video from their visit to Europe.
I remember watching Danny Phantom in elementary school, but I much preferred the other big show from Butch Hartman, the Fairly OddParents. I would have grown out of Playhouse Disney about a year prior, and I couldn't stand the garbage laugh-tracked 'sitcoms' that Disney airs(ed) at non-Playhouse/Junior times. Curious since I loved the Wiggles when I was very young...was this the general version of the show in the house, or the later 'Lights, Camera, Action' version where they ran a TV network ala the old "Kidsongs TV"?

Radio stations play songs more then once a day all the time. Before Mark and Brian were national they started out in Birmingham Alabama at a local radio station there and I downloaded their last local show before they moved to L.A and there are songs heard twice. Songs like In Too Deep by Genesis, which was played before and during Mark and Brian and also "Meet me half way" by Kenny Loggins played during and after M&B. I believe "You keep me hanging on"by Kim Wilde was played before and after Mark and Brian as well.

I realize that, but I was just surprised that whoever recorded the tape didn't realize that they recorded those particular songs already on the same tape.
I don't know much about The Wiggles, but I think the episode on there may have been the "Lights, Camera, Action" version of the show. I was 17 in 2005, so I wasn't watching Disney Channel or Nickelodeon at that point in my life. Maybe reruns of early Spongebob episodes if I ever came across them while flipping through the channels.

As far as audiocassettes are concerned, while I don't pick those up as often as VHS tapes, it's always interesting seeing what artists and musical genres people did and didn't record on cassettes. It's not uncommon for me to see cassettes with the names of classical artists, '50s/'60s/'70s/'80s acts, country singers, southern gospel singers, polka bands, etc. written on the labels, while it's much harder for me to find the names of '90s-era rap/hip-hop/R&B artists or alternative rock or heavy metal bands on those tape labels. Most of the people holding these garage sales, as you can imagine, are either boomers or Gen X-ers, so that explains a lot. Location is also a factor, as I'd be more likely to find cassettes of, say, classic country artists in the rural communities of Medina County than in the suburbs closer to Cleveland.

Heard about everything, I had to make a tough decision: I had to remove the most popular game show on my secondary channel, namely the Leo DiCaprio episode of Fun House....which sucks, but then again nothing sucks worse than your channel being pulled from YouTube. So, yeah the good game shows are gone.

Yep, I know you did. Nothing sucks worse than your channel being pulled, but a whole new level of anger and defeat happens when you lose them ALL - even if they did not have copyright strikes. I've never seen anything like it. Ray Glasser can repost channels when his stuff goes down for copyright; and same with Michael Pannoni...but for me? "(Bleep) you, they're all going down!" ????????????
A week later and zero reply on an appeal. Should I even hope for a miracle at this point? The best thing they can do is bring back VHSgoodiesWA 3 and 4, so I still have some YT presence. Those channels had 1 strike and 0 strikes respectfully. Nevertheless, I will be reaching the 200 video mark on Archive tonight, but many 100s and possibly 1000s to go.

The irony of all of this is that we were playing by the rules that Youtube supposedly told us were rules yet they do not apply them equally or evenly. If we were going to get suspended anyways we should have just posted the whole shows and not even bothered to edit them to just upload the commercials...

I checked my latest Beta lot last night from that seller based in suburban Chicago, and had a decent mix of content. 11 hits and just three dude, with all aired on OTA stations. There was also a street copy of Romancing The Stone (1984) from CBS-FOX Video.

Instead of giving the details of the finds, I'll resume that "Guess what's on the tape based what's written on the label" game for a few of those tapes.

TAPE 1 written on label: "Movie Children of a lesser God", with "Santa Barbara" crossed out

TAPE 2 written on label: "0-17 Phil Collins 17-43 Best of Sat. Nite Live 43- Eurythmics"

TAPE 3 written on label: "Karate Kid", with "Joe's Tape" crossed out

TAPE 4 written on label: "Dad's Tape- Star Wars"

TAPE 5 written on label: "CBS Genesis/Phil Collins Ireland #2 SB Beatles Elton John 4th of July"

TAPE 6 written on label: "Movie Children of Lesser God Rita", with "Santa Barbara" crossed out

I'll reveal the results in several days, along with the finds on the other five tapes in the lot.

There was one guy who uploaded hundreds of Major League Baseball games on Youtube that got his account nuked that was threatening a class action lawsuit against Google, apparently they did not even give him notice or reason as to why they deleted him but I'm guessing copyright claims once again.
And yet THOUSANDS of old MLB games -- every game of every season from 2009 through 2013, including spring training -- have been available on YT ever since on the MLBGlobal09, MLBGlobal10, etc. accounts. Maybe these accounts are owned by Major League Baseball, but it still seems strange.

So I wrote my appeal and Youtube did not even look at it, came back with a canned response less than an hour later of "your account will remain suspended".

Lessons to be learned from this:

1.Cross post your stuff, Youtube will delete everything, whether you have 20 videos or 3,000.
2.Don't try to monetize your content, no matter how much Youtube encourages you to do so, its a trap.
3.If you have issues with your account they will not care and will just give automated responses, I didn't expect to talk to a rep but this was beyond insulting.

I recommend using Archive in the future or possibly other sites that allow some sort of monetization. I am eagerly awaiting Federal government backlash from their disruptive practices regarding the 1st Amendment, as well as monopolization issues, but I would not hold my breath sadly.

The irony of all of this is that we were playing by the rules that Youtube supposedly told us were rules yet they do not apply them equally or evenly. If we were going to get suspended anyways we should have just posted the whole shows and not even bothered to edit them to just upload the commercials...

Say, to keep my channel from going under, I actually added some live-action skits to my channel. (Some find it great, others annoying, but whatever keeps the channel in justifying "fair-use", so be it.)

Up to 275 re-uploaded videos on Internet Archive with a couple thousand more to go...at least. Hitting about 25 videos a day, but really hoping to push that up to 40-50 a day. Does not help when you have college HW and Zoom meetings! Currently I am uploading old content from late 2015 to mid 2016, including old Viewer's Choice and Request PPV stuff, Kansas City newscasts and a few other things. And still no YouTube reply regarding my channels, on this Easter Sunday. Send in another appeal for VHSgoodiesWA3/4?
Do keep in mind, however...275 = 775, 800ish videos. When you compile your videos into one whole part, or a couple or three parts instead of part 21, part 26, part 28...it makes a HUGE difference.

Did some more picking at Goodwill bin stores and the last local thrift that still regularly sells home recorded tapes and found a few gems:

1) Tape labeled LA Laker + Seattle Supersonics and a bunch of scribble impossible to read BASF T130:
-1995/5/4 NBA Western Conference 1st RD Game 4 Seattle at LA Lakers (TBS) (1:49) missing some of first quarter
-1995/5/5 NBA Eastern Conference 1st RD Game 4 Orlando at Boston (TNT) (1:45) mostly complete with choppy editing in parts, this ended up being the last game at Boston Garden
-1995/5/5 NBA Western Conference 1st RD Game 4 Utah at Houston (TNT) (1:51)
(odd that the taper was sitting editing out commercials sometimes but sometimes not, also some halftime but not others, same with postgame)
-1995/5/11 Living Single 2x27 "Talk Showdown" WLFL22 (I believe this was the original airing)
-1995/5/11 New York Undercover 1x26 "Catman Comes Back" WLFL22 (original airing and season finale, I believe TV Tango listing for this night is incorrect as it shows they aired a rerun but this matches the prior Living Single episode, also missing last 15mins)
I found it interesting how TBS and TNT still aired a decent amount of local ad spots back then. I knew that ESPN did into the 2000s but not TBS and TNT.

2) Unlabeled tape though looked to be late 80s to early 90s Memorex tape stock a strange T120+ 10 minutes?
This was a full tape of syndicated episodes of Cheers from the 8th and 9th seasons all with commercials, and though I could not find exact airing dates, I'd guess late May to late June 1993 based on the commercials and movie trailers, with tons of spots for the upcoming Super Mario Bros craptastic bomb of a movie. Also many more promos for the classic Pauly Shore film Son in Law as well as the very short lived Chevy Chase Show. The episodes I could identify were: 8x8, 8x15, 8x16, 8x17, 8x18, 9x2, 9x1, 9x5, 9x9, 9x10, 9x11, and 9x13. These episodes aired on WTTG48/WNRW45 (Winston-Salem, NC) which I think simulcasted content from the FOX network, though WTTG48 was an independent station, I've actually found some stuff from that station before. Speaking of...

3) Unlabeled tape but some gibberish in pen scratched through many times on the tape box, the tape stock seemed early 80s heavy Scotch brand so I gave it a shot:
-1983/11/27 South Pacific 3 hour time block so a ton of commercials WGGT45 (basically the later named WNRW45)
-1983/11/27 Oklahoma WGGT45
Tracking got all wonky about 30 minutes into Oklahoma but it was nice to see something nearly 40 years old given how rare pre 1985 content is these days. Lots of holiday themed commercials for local businesses as this again was an indie channel so few national spots, just regional stuff.

4) I got this tape from a free bin at a local thrift store as many just give out the donated VHS tapes for free (those that don't just trash them directly) early to mid 80s BASF based on weight, tape was labeled Walt Disney The Canine Caper which was scratched through then "Parent Trap":
-1986/10/5 Wonderful World of Disney: "Little Spies" (1:40) all but 2 commercial breaks were cut, and the last few seconds and ending credits were clipped (WHSV-TV3 which is a very small market in Harrisonburg, VA). Like many of the non theatrically released Disney films that aired on TV, this was never released on home video officially. Did find a complete copy on Youtube in Russian so this was a nice find overall.
-1986 (unsure of exact date) "Parent Trap" (1:32) all commercials cut. I believe I have the exact same airing but from WPTF28.
-1986/10/7 The Last Frontier Part 2 of 2 (last 42 minutes with all commercials) (WUSA9) Another hard to find TV miniseries epic which the 80s was quite well known for.
-1986/10/7 WUSA9 11PM News (taper just let it go until it ran out so got a lot of the DC crime report) :) 15)
The majority of commercials had a football theme to them (even more so than usual for the Fall football season), especially McDonalds as it was running an NFL scratchoff collectible card game. I actually bought many of these cards decades later off of Ebay.

5) Tape labeled NBA All Star Game 1992 Scotch T120:
Overall I was quite surprised with the variety of content and time span included on this tape--
-1992/2/9 NBA All Star Game (WRDC 28) (1:40 missing most of 1st quarter and halftime) This was the famous one where Magic Johnson came back after his HIV announcement months prior. I still remember watching his press conference, as a 9 year old this was my first real experience with AIDS and I had a lot of questions for my parents that night. Little did I know that Freddy Mercury quietly announced he had AIDS at the same time as well and died within days.
-Oprah topic of interracial dating : 7 fragment but based on commercials I'd guess 1986) (WTVD11)
-Oprah death row teens (sometime in 1986 cannot find exact episode topic and dates) (WTVD11) : 51 so nearly complete)
-Oprah topic of prostitution : 49 so nearly complete 1986 also) (WTVD11) Remember when Oprah was as high brow as Jerry Springer and Maury Povich?
-"Fanny Hill" : 27 partial airing) based on the Cinemax promos I'd guess sometime in 1986 4 minutes of promos was a bonus
-1986/6/5 Disney Summer Classics Wonderful World of Disney The Apple Dumpling Gang : 54) (WTVD11)
I keep finding tons and tons of Wonderful World of Disney recordings, I'd guess the fact its something to watch with the kids later? I do remember recording a few as a kid in the late 80s so I guess that makes sense.

WJTM was the old callsign for Channel 45 Winston-Salem. They went to WNRW in 1984. WGGT was the channel 48 callsign. WGGT would become a satellite of WNRW in 1991, until 45 went to ABC in 1995 as WXLV, in the swap between channel 45 and WGHP-8.
I have 'Little Spies' on one of the tapes from that huge Ellensburg estate sale lot back in July. I think it was taped off KOMO as was a lot of the ABC stuff recorded pre-Syndex.
