An Appreciation of Easy 99.1

While Easy's signal does not allow full coverage of the Boston Metro, this station is an underrated gem. First, the music variety is the best I have ever heard on a commercial station. The playlist is as broad as I have ever seen, as most Top 40 songs dating back to 1970 (and earlier during the 6 PM hour) can be heard at any given time. It's rare to hear the same song twice in a week, never mind a given day. This station plays a better variety than Jack/Variety Hits stations. Secondly, despite the lack of a morning show and the fact that the station is jockless at night, there is more of a live and local focus than other Boston stations. There is a focus on caller interaction, something I have not heard in years. It is clear that most of afternoon driver Kevin Cronin's shift, for example, is not voice-tracked/is live. Thirdly, the speciality shows are very good. The night-time decades theme, from the "60s at 6" to the "90s at 9," are very well-produced. Fourth, the jocks are seasoned professionals. Tony Bristol works Sunday afternoons, for example. Fifth, the station has dropped its Boston-centric focus and is concentrating on its home base - Plymouth and the surrounding area. One voiceover promotes the station's reach - from Boston to Providence to Cape Cod - but I hardly hear any references to Boston on the station anymore.

Do most agree that this is a great station?

Sorry, WATD does it better, and Ed has never tried to pass WATD off as a Boston station

WPLM has been trying to pass itself off as a Boston station for as long as I can remember, I guess that is not working for them anymore.

I'd love to see the EEO file as there are NO women on the air ....... I wonder why?

It's been at least a year since WPLM has tried to rim-shot Boston. I can't say I have listened to WATD in quite some time, so I really can't compare.

I think WPLM had a female co-host during morning drive, but once the pandemic hit, they cut back their full time airstaff to two.

Yes, however WPLM does have a much better signal into Boston though. Unfortunately, I cannot hardly pick them just up just North of the city at all. I wish that they streamed online, however from the best that I can tell, they don't. At least not yet anyway.

They're streaming from their site, I just checked it, it works. Easy 99.1 | Feel Good Favorites | WPLM-FM

Commercials play online before the stream starts.

Because the women at that station are in sales and in management.

Bait your line elsewhere.

Huh? Pass itself off as a Boston station? It's on all over the place including Providence. How do they try to "pass themselves off as a Boston station" even though I"m pretty sure they get decent ratings in that city? And, how does WATD do it better? Do what better? They are a talk station, then a music station, then a high school sports station, then a paid advertisement station. There isn't any focus. Nice trolling though.

And WATD bills less than a third of what WPLM does. And it is a Boston radio market station as it is licensed in the Nielsen Boston MSA.

Plymouth Country is part of the Boston Metro Survey Area, that is, the Boston radio market. So they are 100% a "Boston" radio station... just a suburban one. WPLM has six times the number of people in its 60 dbu coverage area as WATD, and has a decent share in the Boston ratings... averaging around a 2 share over the last several years.

In radio, "Boston" is not a city, it is a market. The Boston market is all of these counties: Essex, MA, Middlesex, MA, Norfolk, MA, Suffolk, MA, Worcester, MA and Hillsborough, NH.

WPLM is also one of the rare stations these days with growing income, up over 50% over the last 7 years. Yes, it's working for them!

EEO requirements don't say where employment equality and balance have to be in place. There is no legal requisite for any particular gender, race or ethnicity on just air talent.

What he said....I"m willing to bet Easy 99.1 isn't using WATD as a measuring stick. Do I hear Nancy Quill on the imaging too? The station sounds alive, consistent, and big market

I was just thinking about when they're gonna get their morning show back. It's really weird hearing just music in the morning. But come to think of it, back when they were AC/Hot AC "Variety 99.1" from 1994-95, did they have a morning show then? Somehow I remember they kind of did, but not nearly like their competitor Mix 98.5. And I know they did not get good ratings, so they switched to smooth jazz.

I actually just got thinking of something else. I wonder how much longer Abby will be doing the Joke of the Day. She first did it when she was 8 years old and she’s 13 now. And I think some other stations across the country run it, such as WZID in Manchester, NH. Sometimes they will play her first intro they recorded years ago and then she’ll tell her current joke. And I don’t think she’s ever repeated the same joke twice. And this is even more interesting. I think it actually started over February vacation one year, and I guess it was a “take your daughter to work day.” And she wanted to do something on the radio, so Scott let her tell a joke. And then she did it again the next day, and the next day, and everyone loved it so they made it a regular feature. I’m sure she’s trying to follow in her father’s footsteps.
