Entercom To Rebrand as Audacy

RadioInsight coming in with one hell of a scoop. Entercom will be changing its corporate name to Audacy (assuming it's pronounced like Odyssey).

Sounds like tomorrow's going to be quite interesting.

There was a DAW named Audicy that I'm sure some of y'all have worked on.

Honestly, why didn't they just put the entire company under the Radio.com moniker?

Because they're branching beyond radio. They also can't trademark "radio."
By ditching "com," they're also separating themselves from communications. The "aud" in Audacy suggests audio, but pronounced "odyssey," the name only suggests a long journey. I guess the main factor in naming companies or products these days is to pick an out-of-left-field name that no one else would ever dream of picking or a better one that somehow doesn't have a domain squatter holding it for ransom or whose owner is willing to part with it for a realistic price.

There's a YouTube competitor whose has a branding that's also pronounced Odyssey too but this one is a video sharing site though.

Not so sure how the Audacy branding will play on this one though.

Yeah, it's not the strongest name. They already have the Radio.com domain, and that's pretty straightforward. Are they trademarking "radio?" No. They'd be getting behind Radio.com as a brand. An umbrella. It's easy to remember. It doesn't invent a new word.

Audacy? It isn't memorable. And expecting people to realize "oh, it's like an audio odyssey" is a bit of a reach. They've certainly got some heavy lifting ahead of them.

I think that will remain the brand for their radio stations. They clearly need to drive people to that domain.

But this is an overall name for radio and new business. Podcasting and other licensing needs its own brand.

The first song on my playlist this morning is apropos:

Someone's always playing corporation games
Who cares, they're always changing - corporation names!

- Starship, 1985

One primary aspect is that they're abandoning the Radio.com branding and website because they're much more than just "radio" today. Toward the bottom of that news item, there are mentions of podcasts, on-demand and interactive technologies. Elsewhere it points out things like gaming and distribution.

I also found the snippets below to be quite telling. Entercom is just the latest company to move away from radio or radio-themed branding:

"Entercom is the latest company to rename itself to reflect an expansion beyond its broadcast radio roots, following in the footsteps of iHeartMedia (formerly Clear Channel), Urban One (formerly Radio One) and Uforia (the brand name for Univision Radio).

Since merging with CBS Radio in late 2017, Entercom says it has evolved into a “scaled, multi-platform audio content and entertainment organization” with positions in broadcasting, podcasting, digital, network, live experiences, music, sports and news."

Including one of the big clusters in Buffalo.

AllAccess.com reports that effective immediately, Entercom will now be known as(drumroll, please).....Audacy.

Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

I always like to read the small print. Here's the copyright at the bottom of the website:

© 2021 Entercom Communications Corp. All rights reserved. Part of Audacy.

Yeah, a bunch of companies, including Clear Channel have gone through rebranding and name changes in relatively recent years. In this case, Entercom seemed to feel they needed a change and they wanted to ditch the radio.com branding and website, since they've got their hands in so many more areas now. Here's a related discussion:

Maybe they should've simply rebranded with the origin of their name: Entertainment Communications. That's certainly more demonstrative than Odyssey...or is it Oddity....I mean, Audacy.

I wonder how much they spent on research before settling on THAT name. Love to see the list of what didn't make the cut. Any chance "Dream of Field's" was considered?

So Radio.com now redirects to Audacy.com. ETM spent the better part of 2 years promoting radio.com and they just drop it like a hot potato. I guess if you have the money, you can do what you want.

Keep in mind this company was founded by Field's father. And his father is still on the board of directors. Almost like changing the family name. But clearly this is being done for Wall Street.

It was a holdover from the CBS ownership. Entercom has no real emotional attachment to it.
