KJUL 104.7 going off air

One of those rim shots that never has done well in the target market. Spotty signal in Las Vegas.

That mountain that’s in the way is Apex peak, home of many boosters for the rimshots. If only KJUL could have gotten a booster there
I wonder why KJUL doesn't have a booster?
The booster can't extend the main signals "Predicted" 60 dBu by its own 6o dBu.

KJUL is still on the air but at very low power. Like about 20-30 dB lower. It might be running on the exciter only, which could actually go far because the tower has 15 bays and 104.7 is clear. No commercials but they still air Fox News and John Tesh.
I think this might be more detrimental than simply going off the air entirely. At least before it could be heard well in the car all over Vegas. Now it’s mostly static. And don’t they need an STA to run on low power

Isn't KJUL Adult Standards?
The only remaining FM Adult Standards outlet I'm aware of in a large market is KAHL Radio and it's FM translators, covering all of San Antonio TX. Call 1310 Radio - San Antonio
No streaming, apparently the owner doesn't want to pay the extra royalties to stream it. So they have little online presence. At least make a Facebook page, guys. LOL

It used to be, but when I got a look at their "last songs played" after WEZV Myrtle Beach went soft AC in 2017 and fans of that station were saying what they changed to on Facebook, I discovered that it was actually soft AC with more of the songs that would be typical on an "adult standards" station than most soft ACs, but as far as I could tell no actual standards.
Here's an adult standards station. Of course, they've been known to go too far playing soft AC, but this station plays more actual standards (certainly true today) by my definition than the satellite format America's Best Music, which I think KJUL used to be.
KJUL had been 24/7 airing "AM Only." Ironically, a service called AM Only was airing on an FM station in Las Vegas. It eventually became "America's Best Music" but not while KJUL was carrying it.
The station had been in receivership and the court-appointed manager wanted to put something on the air that would require no DJs or music staff. He chose AM Only, just as a place-holder, no advertising or promotion. Within a few months, KJUL had shot to #1. But it wasn't on 104.7 at the time. It was on the better signal at 104.3, today's KFRH.
The station, I believe, was bought by Beasley, which decided to keep adult standards but with its own staff and music. However, it switched the frequencies, giving K-Jewel the lesser signal at 104.7. I think Beasley's country station moved first to 104.3, and again to 102.7 as KCYE The Coyote.
Over time, KJUL has increased the Barry Manilow and Celine Dion, and reduced the Perry Como and Nat King Cole. But then America's Best Music has done the same. When I hear ABM, it's nearly all soft oldies, with a song every hour or two from Sinatra or Dean Martin that got played on Top 40 stations of the 1960s and 70s. If it didn't cross over to the Top 40, it's probably deleted from the ABM playlist.

When I first read that fans of a soft oldies/standards station were trying KJUL, I listened but Perry Como and Nat King Cole have not merely been reduced. They are only heard at Christmas if even then. Things have not changed to my knowledge.
I just realized. Maybe KJUL should be called soft oldies, not soft AC. I don't think any of the songs I've heard are newer than the 90s, and a few are from the 60s.
I didn't listen to that much of it earlier but I decided to listen more. One thing is certain: it is not like WDUV or Miami's Easy 93.1. It's what people on this site used to call "supersoft AC".

Beasley didn't give KJUL the 104.7 frequency. KJUL 104.3 was dramatically underbilling its ratings as its audience was almost entirely 55+. It dumped the format, and 104.7 picked it up.
Beasley divested 104.3 and 790 and picked up 105.7 and 107.9 within a year's time. It was going to have to divest one station to stay under the ownership caps. It got about double what it paid for the two stations when it sold 104.3/790. Beasley kept the country format but moved it to the stronger 102.7 signal.
I was Local content director for an Americas Best Music station and regularly had chats with the PD Carl Hampton.. and i told him we were calling it soft adult oldies..and he said that was a good way to put it to advertisers and listeners

What about just calling the format "Softies"?
One problem with emphasizing how soft it is: there are exceptions to the rule such as "The Way He Makes Me Feel" by Michael Jackson and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears. It's still somewhat softer than WEZV Myrtle Beach SC was in its soft AC days. Back in 2017 fans of that station who were upset by the move away from more of a standards sound were saying how much they like KJUL. I couldn't tell the difference, but after listening to the entire Google Drive file, there is a difference.
And on the subject of new songs, there was one: "Speechless" by Dan + Shay. But that's from a six-hour sample.
Each hour does end with a smooth jazz instrumental.
