It's actually not that easy to get WLIP at night in Chicago even, because of the interference from CHUM in Toronto. During the daytime it comes in better.
Very true. WLIP can be tough here. Conditions were just right for Bob's catch.
Agree. Nicely done. WLIP is also about 35 miles from my location. The 250 watts non-directional is 24/7, Radioman is due south, while I'm basically west-southwest.
The WLIP day signal here is basically "fair" but prone to splatter from splatter from local WNVR 10kw days, but only 130 watts at night. At night, I'm also in the null of WNVR designed to protect WBZ. So that basically eliminates the splatter problem. But. as Radioman and Michael have indicated, CHUM, XEG, and whatever else might be present on 1050 usually are enough to overtake WLIP. At my son's house about 15 miles east-northeast of me, nights are all WLIP.

I was on 840 Yesterday morning (6/6) about an hour before local sunrise. What I was hearing was a Spanish language station playing what I would describe as easy listening music. Mostly vocals. I suspected Cuba, but never caught an ID. Signal was good with no trace of WHAS or anything else on the channel. (WHAS typically owns the channel around here during hours of darkness.) After about a half hour, it started getting light outside, and the station faded. Any ideas?

KVJY plays religious music in Spanish sometimes.

I'm guessing Cuba. KVJY appears to have a night pattern that would put me (at my vacation location) in the null that protects WHAS. Of course, if they were running day pattern at 5kw, it could be a different story.
Another new one for me on 830... WMMI in Shepherd, MI was coming in quite well about 9PM CDT. It's a 1 KW daytime only station, but it was still on about 40 minutes after local sunset there. Until a few weeks ago I had only gotten WCCO on 830, and now I have two others... WMMI and WCRN Worcester MA.

Strong E Skip Opening a few days ago, from here in Upstate South Carolina, I heard some French speaking stations, on 92.9 and on 96.5 which I believe to be 92.9 CHYK-3 (Hearst) and CFTX 96.5 (Gatineau/Ottawa). Strong E-skip number above Northern WV made this one happen (up to 165mhz) showing up on the E-Skip map. Lasted a few minutes but it was nice to hear over the other nearest stations on those frequencies which would be 96.5 W243DV (WSVM) Valdese NC / WOXL (Asheville NC) and WEGX 92.9 (Dillon SC) which usually only comes in during strong tropo. I got a video of it too.
Just got a QSL card for the KCUP DX test broadcast. I sent in a recording of my reception which included bits and pieces of code and tones. That was enough to confirm my reception. Extremely happy with this QSL. This one rates as one of my top DX catches of all time, both on AM and shortwave. Thanks to all involved in arranging this test and verifying the reception reports.
Naturally, I have to wonder if KCUP has a coffee maker that uses k cups in the break room.
