HD Radio Update

Took a trip down to the Old Pueblo today in the new vehicle (2020 Toyota Sienna w/HD radio) and just for kicks had it tuned to 93.3 HD (or 92.7 if you prefer). Signal was perfect until reaching Red Rock when it began wiffing and was totally dead by the time we reached Marana. Didn't try any of the Tucson stations because our turn-around was Silverbell Road and had the radio off on the way back so as not to disturb the newly acquired rescue dog.

I noted to the wifey that I began traveling that road (long before it was I-10) back in the late 1940's and it is just as ugly a trip today as it was back then (except back then the highway took you through Casa Grande and Eloy and you could stop for a cold A-1 brewski in either town).

Was there a road, other than US 80/89 well east of AJ and via Florence (now SR 79), or SR 87 via Mesa, Chandler, Coolidge, and Eloy that ended at SR 84, that went from Phoenix to Tucson in those days? I though I-10 was a new road between Phoenix and Casa Grande, north of SR 84.

At least the current SR 79 is a much better drive than I-10, even though it goes through Florence.

Some of our less studious Media Hut grads are making plates there. We tell 'em there's free job placement!

93~Three HD~Too is a great back up for coverage impaired 92~Seven. But you just can't beat the daytime coverage of Lumberyard 14~Forty. Nothin' like rockin to the oldies in glorious Ancient Modulation while behind the wheel of a '76 Gremlin.

The Gremlin is 45 years old this year! If anniversaries are named after metals and stones, perhaps 45th is "The Asphalt Anniversary"!

Wave at the inmates as you pass through Florence (but don't pick up any hitchhikers), then stop at the roadside monument in remembrance of Tom Mix.

It is the Bicentennial edition from the geniuses in Kenosha. We picked it up from the used car lot at Mecham AMC in Glendale. A lot of bad burritos consumed in that car as the seat cushions will attest.

And with only an eight year production run.. Hate to admit it; but when I was in high school, I bought a brand new 74 Gremlin factory ordered with the 304V8 and 4 speed manual gearbox. My dad thought I'd lost my mind. Other than breaking two rear ends while drag racing the car, and terrible fuel economy, it wasn't that bad of a vehicle. Like a lot of things AMC did, that hatchback design was a car out of time.

SR-79 was US-80 once upon a time...
