WFNI 1938-2021

1070 WFNI went off the air at 11:22pm ET in the middle of ESPN. No goodbyes, or retrospective, someone hit the kill switch.

Probably just a temporary technical issue.

Their live stream is still going.

Until they come back on the air, I'd be trying to listen for KNX if I was in the area!

AM 1070 has been turned off for the long term, if not permanently. The land was sold for development, and the towers are coming down. WFNI continues on WIBC 93.1-HD2, which feeds two FM translators in Indianapolis.

The only way 1070 ever comes back is as a downgraded signal with one tower, or diplexed with another existing station (and Indy has always been "under-AM'ed"). Either way, it's highly unlikely that it will be running 50 kW. This is the fate of many, if not most large-market AM stations. The land the towers sit on is far more valuable than the radio station itself.

No, this is the end of WFNI from its present 50/10 DA-2 facility and Emmis ownership.

The stream continues because the Fan format continues on HD2/translators. The land under the towers is being sold.

As for the license... wait and see.

Oh, OK. I wasn't aware of what was actually going on.

I was wondering if it was just a temporary issue because it's not yet listed as 'silent' according to the AM station info guide.

Emmis did not turn in the license/CP. I have no idea what they plan to do with it, but I doubt they'll put it back on the air. I'm willing to bet some religious outfit will make an offer.

Interesting that their final ID was WIBC, not WFNI.

Yes, they ran the old top-of-hour “Radio Indiana” ID. Expected to hear a report on Indy 500 qualifying after it. Alas, static.

Came across a video of the shutoff on Twitter and remembered I had heard about the shutoff on this forum earlier. That's a much higher quality recording though! Thanks for that.

Hearing that historical legal ID was amazing, even if I've never listened to that station before. Love those kinds of things!

I remember that WCFL played this song shortly after the switch to Beautiful Music in March, 1976 during a Silent Period test. WCFL 1000 still exists in many people's minds, and as WMVP. The WIBC/WFNI 1070 license will be back soon in SOME form. They would be a fool to not transfer the license to operate STA from a nondirectional diplex or apply for a small footprint DA as a lower power Class B, if even to improve another station's coverage.

Aren't the Godcasters primarily focused on acquiring underperforming FMs now?

Except the Catholic groups. They're still paying a pretty penny for AMs, and I don't think there's a Catholic station in Indy (i'm happy to be corrected on that). It's of course innacurate to say "WFNI" came on the air in 1938, the facility was WIBC until WIBC flipped to 93.1 FM.
