Any thoughts?

KBLX's share cut practically in *HALF*?? WTF?
The last several months had an upward spike. They are now in the vicinity of their historic levels.

I averaged three book periods from Spring 2019 to today and got:

2.5, 2.3, 1.7, 1.9, 2.1, 3.0, 2.7, 2.9, 3.8 (the last is Apr-May-June of this year). So the current 6+ is well within the "normal" but highly erratic range.

Remember, the market is about 6% Black, making the sample very small and highly volatile.

David, can you give us the 25-54 numbers for KISQ/98.1 The Breeze? (18-34 numbers will be great, too, though KISQ is obviously an older-skewing format.)

If The Breeze pulls in good numbers within the money demo, then that's impressive, considering that the station is playing loads of ballads / slower songs (not the least of which includes loads of Air Supply songs and even a few fairly obscure songs such as "It Might Be You") for a market that is not full of retirees (maybe Marin County fits the bill, but Marin is only a small portion of the Bay Area). All I know is that KISQ has the largest share out of all music stations in the Bay Area (and the second-highest cume behind KOIT).

David, could you please try and give us the 18-34 numbers for KYLD(WiLD 94.9)? 25-54 numbers would also be good. Thanks Buddy!

KISQ is #3 in 18-34 and #4 in 18-49, the all access article does not show the 25-54 numbers so David can maybe share that.

KISQ doing well among 18-34 listeners is impressive, considering that the format is not as successful as 98.1 The Breeze in places like Philadelphia, Austin, or Seattle. And 105.5 The Dove in Tampa Bay, a long-time beautiful music/easy listening station, is now more akin to a pop-leaning classic hits station. (This, despite the Tampa Bay area being older in terms of median age than the San Francisco Bay Area.) The reason for KISQ's success may need to be studied.

And it looks like KYLD/Wild 94.9 is here to stay despite stiff competition from KMVQ/99.7 NOW and CHR being in the doldrums nationwide.

Does it have do with demographics since Bay Area is at least 20% Asians. That’s why kblx and kisq tends to do well even with the low 6% black population in the Bay Area.

Besides researchers and focus groups tends to ignore Asian demographics, not only in radio, but other services as well.

I'm not sure about listening habits among Asian Americans either, but I do know that Urban AC in general is including more throwback hip-hop in their playlists. In addition to KBLX, see WAMJ/Majic 107.5 & 97.5 in Atlanta, which is also quite heavy on the hip-hop throwbacks. I think WALR/Kiss 104.1 in Atlanta is gradually doing the same, after being an urban oldies station for a long time. WBLS and WDAS, too.

i wonder if Asian listeners are really driving the success of KISQ, considering that Soft AC has been seen as a format being most successful in retirement communities or places with an older population. KBEB in Sacramento might be doing well in the ratings also, considering that Sacramento isn't really seen as an older market. And both KISQ and KBEB are substantially more softer than either WDUV in Tampa or WFEZ in Miami.

What *I* find fascinating is the 3.0 share of classical, non-commercial KDFC. I don't recall any other classical stations getting that high of a rating in recent years, in any market.

Speaking of Classical, how is it KUSC is listed (albeit with a tiny 0.1 share) in the SF book -- it shows as their FM signal, not their stream.
