KDKB Drops Morning Show

No surprise. AltAz is one of the lowest rated radio stations in Phoenix. They're replacing the syndicated Woody Show with non-stop alternative music.

Hubbard doesn't need to push iHeart shows (although they're also running Bobby Bones for some reason on their Seattle country station). And the slackers who listen aren't awake in the morning anyway.

No surprise at all. Why bother with 93.3 when you can hear the exact same alt-"mold" on 94.5 -and- countless Sirius/XM channels that come pre-installed with even most used cars? They need to flip back to rock since nobody's competing with 97.9 anymore.

Sure. Let's make 93.3 go head to head with (checks notes) its sister station down the hall. Gonna make a ton of money that way.
We might just see 93.3 do something other than some kind of rock format for the first time in 50 years.

Or not. Unless there's a format that hasn't been invented yet, is there more money in being the third country station, third CHR, fourth Oldies/Classic Hits, third AC, third talk station...

Or do you keep on keeping on and wait out the doldrums of the music cycle? Because let's get real, Pop/Alt as a genre is stuck there right now.

Remember when Phoenix had two alt station. K zone and the edge 103.9. Much better stations I thought than what they have now. What did y'all think of the edge and k zone?

Guitar-driven alt has been getting a few entries on pop lately, which indicates an increased interest. Synth-driven alt has been doing well too. I think if Hubbard wants to weather this out they certainly can.

If you can't take advantage of an increased amount of hits like "Heat Waves", "Beggin", "My Ex's Best Friend", "A-OK", "Monsters", "transparentsoul", and other such tracks, not to mention the variety of quality synthpop, indie rock, and alternative rock all available for airplay right now, then you're screwing up in ways that only a new PD can solve.

I know there is no format hole to fill in right now. Hubbard doesn’t really do rhythmic formats, so putting rhythmic AC/“oldies” on a non-rimshot station is no option.

Even with former KROQ GM Trip Reeb behind it, ALT AZ has been poorly executed since the 2014 flip. Maybe the guys down the hall at KUPD stopped the management from making it a better station, but it will never be a great station as it is positioned right now.

I never thought of Infinity-era KZON as being a good alternative station, compared to its East Valley suburban signal competition Edge 103.9. But, it got the better ratings because of its signal and Howard Stern.

IIRC, the Infinity era KZON was a good station...maybe not a "true" alternative (whatever that means), but more entertaining. There was a time when they had a young Holmberg, and some really creative "in between the songs" stuff.

I agree with you 100%. However, I think it's because the new music at that time was better than it is now. I agree that the alternative rock format is hurting because of the likes of iHeart Radio and Audacity's move to make the format a nationwide cookie cutter type format, but the main issue in my belief is the lack of good new music to work with.

iHeart's cookie cutter approach isn't hurting the country format, is it?
Not apparently, but David Field's approach seems to be tanking them! Look at Houston and PHX.

As we've discussed, Houston & Phoenix problems pre-date Audacy's national approach.

When was the last time KMLE had decent numbers? Maybe when Ben & Brian did mornings.

But KMLE absolutely tanked after the most recent changes. Houston was neck and neck, and KILT had a winning streak just before Audacy instituted the "nationalization" process. Now it is way, way behind.

The ratings for KILT have been basically a straight line. The station had a 3.1 in September 2020 (before the changes) and they have a 3.1 now. KKBQ had a 3.8 in September 2020, and they have a 3.9 now.

KMLE had a 3.6 a year ago, and a 3.0 now. KNIX had a 5.9 a year ago and a 4.9 now. KMLE fired their longtime PD a year ago, and hired his replacement in August.

iHeart's cookie cutter approach didn't hurt the AC format either, although the only difference between mainstream AC and Hot AC/Adult Top 40 these days is that mainstream AC has air talent that is more in touch with the 35-54 female demographic--the demos that are still listening to terrestrial radio in big numbers--hence mainstream ACs getting better ratings vs. the Hot AC counterparts. The music is pretty much almost identical.
