What kind of format would you call 95.7 The Ride

Good question! Most stations that call themselves "Classic Hits" play the Top 40 hits of the 1980s, a few 70s and and a few 90s. It seems they limit the dance and pop songs, concentrating mostly on rock hits. But an occasional Madonna, Gloria Estefan or Whitney Houston song is heard from time to time.

Then there are the other type of Classic Hits station. They play ONLY songs you heard on AOR stations growing up. But those songs had to hit the Top 40 as well, maybe not that high, but somewhere in the Top 40. But no pop or dance. Stations that fall into this classification are WJGL Jacksonville, KOFX El Paso, WXGL Tampa, WFNK Portland ME and WXRC Charlotte.

For a time, WROR Boston and KQQL Minneapolis also were in this category. But they now do the Michael Jackson and Prince thing. Those African American artists, but only those two, are OK. And pop leaning artists who used to get played on AOR stations are OK too. Huey Lewis & The News, Hall & Oates, Doobie Brothers.

So yeah, WXRC is a Classic Hits station. But we should say "Rock-leaning Classic Hits."

It's been a while, but I have heard America, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye. Also Stevie Wonder, but his "Superstition" somehow showed up on WRFX, an actual classic rock station.

There were AOR/Progressive stations that still played some R&B and even folk hits. Then the format went all headbanging, all the time

Why kind of format would you have called 103.7 the Bone in Wilmington.

They would literally play anything with a rock element from the 60s to today. It was an even better station than 95.7 imo

It's branded as classic hits but seems more like an AOR station
I don't know that I would classify WXRC as an "AOR Station" in the 21st Century. It definitely was in 1986 though. It was playing "New Rock" that could not be heard on any other AM or FM Station in the Area. Fast Forward to today and WXRC is playing Leo Sayer who is most definitely not "Rock". Never thought I'd hear Leo Sayer played on 95.7 FM. Steve.

Maybe a true AOR station. Remember the early AOR stations were a bit difficult to predict and from what I have read about the early West Coast AOR stations it was a lot about creating a theme or a mood. Some pretty creative stuff!

I think The Ride enjoys being non corporate and unpredictable. I give them credit for that!
