Good question! Most stations that call themselves "Classic Hits" play the Top 40 hits of the 1980s, a few 70s and and a few 90s. It seems they limit the dance and pop songs, concentrating mostly on rock hits. But an occasional Madonna, Gloria Estefan or Whitney Houston song is heard from time to time.
Then there are the other type of Classic Hits station. They play ONLY songs you heard on AOR stations growing up. But those songs had to hit the Top 40 as well, maybe not that high, but somewhere in the Top 40. But no pop or dance. Stations that fall into this classification are WJGL Jacksonville, KOFX El Paso, WXGL Tampa, WFNK Portland ME and WXRC Charlotte.
For a time, WROR Boston and KQQL Minneapolis also were in this category. But they now do the Michael Jackson and Prince thing. Those African American artists, but only those two, are OK. And pop leaning artists who used to get played on AOR stations are OK too. Huey Lewis & The News, Hall & Oates, Doobie Brothers.
So yeah, WXRC is a Classic Hits station. But we should say "Rock-leaning Classic Hits."
