Alt 92.3

And of course, Audacy dropping personalities on KVIL follows Audacy's flip of KITS in San Francisco from Alt to adult hits, one month ago.

But as we've discussed, that option is not available in Dallas. They already own a station in that format.

My point is that Audacy may be moving away from the Alt format. I don't know whether there are any format holes in Dallas.

There isn't really any obvious holes in DFW. There are some rimshots with mediocre to bad signals that do pretty well in the ratings that you could try to "cover" with the much better signal, such KRNB.

They have an ailing all-news* AM station that could use some sprucing and re-investment as an FM.

Or they could try to go back to AC or CHR which they previously ran on KVIL. It's hard to imagine either of those performing worse than the current Alt format.

*KRLD isn't all-news on nights and weekends.

All that would do is kill whatever revenue they're getting from KVIL. There would be no real revenue replacement.

I'm not disagreeing with your overall point at all, I think KRLD seems close to expiration, but they could clear a sizable one time windfall from the 1080 site should they sell it off. It's a substantial chunk of undeveloped land surrounded by residential neighborhoods and apartments.

Audacy just made two big Alternative format leadership hires this month which certainly doesn't point to them moving away from the Alt format. This looks more like the first shot from new Regional VP/Alternative John Allers aimed at fixing the biggest underperforming Alt station.

And all news has a very poor performance history in the Sunbelt.

Well yes, the subject heading is Alt 92.3, and this thread is on the New York board, but the discussion seems to have drifted to KVIL in DFW which is what I was responding to.
And here I wanted to talk about FM 101.9 in Orlando. 😆

I think the missing point is that where what happens in other markets can be an indication of what may happen, it's not a "a+b=c; therefore b+a=c" situation. That would be like saying that because 94.7 flipped to Classic Hip-Hop, that every Audacy Country station should take notice. What happened in San Francisco and Dallas were specific to those stations and markets. Yes, they can be a predictor to a possible change in New York. But it's not an absolute.

I think this could be a significant sign that Alt's days are numbered, but....

If a change was imminent, wouldn't they just keep these syndicated shows until the actual spin of the big format wheel?

Why dismantle the station slowly in pieces?
It makes perfect sense to dismantle it slowly. They could first see if the station (with it's lower numbers) with fewer on air talent to pay is affordable and then decide if it's worth keeping.

A few non-marquee talent is not going to make or break a budget of a Class C station in market 5. The talent in question at KVIL were syndicated from the same owner's stations in other markets, likely not at great expense.

Either the format generates enough revenue and profit to justify its existence or not. If not, and the station is unlikely to improve its position in the future a format change will occur.

AllAccess reports that Audacy's Alt 103.7 (KVIL) in Dallas has dropped their morning and afternoon personalities, "as the station heads in a more music intensive direction."
Is such a move often a prelude to a format flip? Maybe another indication that the Alt format is not doing so well?
KVIL Dallas
Awesome i hate "djs"....just shutup & play the hits. :)
+ the stations save $$.
Now we need some NY stations to do this too.

We already have that. It's called Spotify, or Pandora, or take your pick. The difference is, they all let you skip songs you don't like and tweak the playlist to match your preferences, so why would you want to listen to that on the radio where you can't customize anything and have to sit through 8+ minute blocks of commercials?

So no, radio needs to be in the business of entertaining, not being a jukebox. And by being in the business of entertaining I don't mean putting some voice tracked jock between songs with nothing to say besides what she (and everyone else already) read on the internet. Because if that's all they're going to do then you're right, they might as well have no jock at all which brings us full circle back to might as well listen to Spotify.

Well, then I'm sure a format change will happen there soon.
