Preparing for the Ellen-calypse

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been on the air for 19 seasons, and this is her final season. Many TV stations across the country have aired Ellen at the same time for many years. Here in Boston, when it originally came out it was on WHDH channel 7, which was then an NBC affiliate, but after 3 years it moved to WCVB channel 5, and it originally aired at 9am. I actually see this as being very similar to what was called by some, the "Oprah-calypse" when her long-running syndicated TV show was cancelled. WCVB had aired Oprah in the afternoon since 1987 (I think it was on WBZ the first year). I think it used to be on at 5pm but then moved to 4pm in 1994. But they had it on at 4pm from then until it got cancelled, when Ellen moved to Oprah's old timeslot. I remember they even had a rolling rally in Boston for her, just like they would when a sports team wins a championship. However, at some point (I don't remember when) it moved from 4pm to 3pm. It actually seems like a lot of stations air it at 3pm now. However, WCVB's sister station WMUR still airs it at 4pm. It's one of the few differences between WCVB and WMUR.

And I'm pretty sure WJAR in Providence had aired Ellen at 3pm since it debuted, but then moved it to 4pm when Oprah went off the air. So I wonder if a lot of affiliates that air it at 4pm will simply replace it with a newscast. I've noticed more and more stations doing that. However, I would be surprised if WMUR came out with a 4pm newscast. Though I heard that NBC O&Os (which I think all air Ellen at 3pm except WBTS in Boston, which is the only NBC O&O not to air Ellen) will simply move the Kelly Clarkson show to Ellen's old timeslot (3pm). However, WBTS already airs Kelly at 3pm.

Also, I'm not sure if you remember this, but I'm pretty sure that when Ellen first started her show, a lot of affiliates aired the show in the morning, including some of the major NBC O&Os. But then it became an afternoon show, just like Oprah did (except in Chicago, where the show originated). I'd be surprised if there are any affiliates that still air Ellen in the morning. But I think there's a few stations that air Kelly Clarkson in the morning.

WCCB moved it to 4 for its final season to make room for Kelly Clarkson at 5 which it acquired from WJZY/WMYT.

NBC O&Os will move Kelly Clarkson to 3:00 p.m. to replace Ellen and yes, there could be more local newscasts coming to replace Ellen in the 4:00 p.m. timeslot.

If people really are treating this like the Ellen-calypse, then they must assume NBC does not have a backup? NBC has been prepping for years because of this, and I think we will see more of "The Doctors" or "Kelly Clarkson", and in most major cities, the newscast could expand to cover.

Very high chance that where I live, the Ellen station (KNDO/KNDU 'NBC Right Now') finds another show to replace it with and not replace it with 4:00 news. Yakima/Tri-Cities stations don't seem to change much on their news product. Only one station does news at 4:30AM, no noon news, no 4:00 news either.
KIMA-TV/KEPR-TV have the rights to Kelly Clarkson. I doubt they will be forced to move Kelly to KNDO but could be persuaded by NBC Universal.

Or will Jennifer Hudson's new show take over KNDO in the fall? Who knows...

Depends where you live or if Kelly Clarkson switches channels. North Eastern Iowa has Ellen at 4 on KGAN a CBS affiliate. Kelly Clarkson was on at 3 but moved to 9am this year on KCRG an ABC affiliate.

In Des Moines Ellen airs at 4pm on KCCI a CBS affiliate and Kelly Clarkson airs on the same network at 12:35am. So I could see Kelly moving to 4pm on that channel.

Ellen airs at 3pm on WWTV (Cadillac/Traverse City). It used to air at 4pm, but was moved to 3pm (with LMAD moving from 3pm to 10am) a few years back to make room for a 4pm local talk show.

Kelly Clarkson airs at 3pm on crosstown NBC affiliate WPBN.

NBC owns WVIT-TV channel 30 of New Britain/Hartford. For now, it's Kelly at 2 and Ellen at 3. Channel 30, 3 (CBS) and 61 (FOX) all air news at 4 pm. (ABC channel 8 of New Haven double runs "Judge Judy".)

Ellen has been on Wood TV for most of its run other than being on WWMT from 2005-08 at 10AM. I don't know what Wood TV would put on maybe a newscast at 4PM.

Maybe they will air Mellen.
This is funny, and yet SNL does bring up some good points. Only political talk is truly aimed at men, and then only conservative talk. Otherwise, I guess we have sports? Perhaps Mellen is what we need after all!

WCAU, because it's an NBC O&O, has Kelly at 2 and Ellen at 3. We know that Clarkson is moving to 3 on the O&O's once Ellen ends, but I wonder what they'll air at 2. Possibly Jennifer Hudson's show, if it does come to fruition.

It’s another big shift, but of far lesser magnitude than Oprah. Like orders of magnitude less.
KHOU in Houston had carried the show the entire time (1986-2011) at 4PM weekdays. Ellen has been carried since the mid-2000s when it moved from KPRC-TV. When Oprah was cancelled, KHOU was finally able to have a 4PM newscast like the other Big 3 stations.

More than likely, KHOU will have a 3PM newscast to replace Ellen. The other option is moving/rerunning the local morning show to the afternoon; but it would face KPRC-TV's established local mid-afternoon show, Houston LIfe. It could simply continue with the Great Day Houston format or transform it into a reboot of host Deborah Duncan's old KTRK talk show in the early '00s that was once hoped to be the successor to Oprah.

This SNL sketch reminds me a little of The Man Show that ran for about 5 years on Comedy Central in the early-mid 00s. Hosted by comedians Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel, they'd basically bring in the all-male studio audience and have them play drinking games for 1/2 hour prior to taping to get them wound up. The show was supposed to celebrate (and at times parody) all things men and was a collection of comedic dialog between the hosts, sketches and games and contests with audience participation, with the ever-present "juggies", or well endowed scantily dressed young ladies who were featured during the intro, danced in the aisles going in and out of breaks and were then featured jumping on a trampoline in slow motion with the camera at various angles during the closing credits. FUN FACTS: The Man Show was originally pitched to ABC which passed, before it was picked up by Comedy Central. Also, once Kimmel and Corolla moved on, it was hosted for a short time before cancellation by 2 new guys, one of whom was Joe Rogan, later of UFC and podcasting fame.

Oh GOD...imagine 250 men in an audience jumping up and down and crying their manly eyes out over a 12 Days of Giveaways-type show. It would sound like a WWE match in that studio.
