KNX onto … 97.1??

Some 97.1 observations about items discussed so far in this thread:
* The digital display for 97.1 is ID'ing with the KNX calls. KNOU no longer appears on the display. Ditto for the HD2 and HD3 - they display as KNX
* 97.1 is listed as KNX-HD1 so it appears the quality HD delivery audio continues (HD has not been turned off as some here surmised)
* KNX music beds have been overhauled with this move to FM. I like how the traffic sounder continues to play gently under the traffic report. It has a big market, qualitative feel to it
* 1070 appears to be about 6 seconds ahead of 97.1
* 101.1 HD2 continues to display the former KNX 10^70 Newsradio logo - which does not present cleanly in the box graphic real estate provided on the car audio screen
* References omit the "point", so it's "ninety seven one", as compared to others who say "one oh six point seven", "one oh two point seven"
 
Is that real-time though? I used the call sign reservation system recently for a couple of our stations and I got the feeling that it isn't real time and that it isn't all that automated but has a lot of manual processing. In this case, since KNX is already in use, it would have needed some manual processing. It very well may have already been requested but it hasn't been completed yet or at least not showing up in the CSRS.

On the subject of call letters, its probably been mentioned further back in this thread, but it doesnt matter.

EVen if 97.1 remained KNOU, they would, could and should call it KNX. AS lojng as they ID'd it as KNOU Los Angeles or whatever at TOH, it doesnt matter.

106.9 San Francisco is KFRC and theyve referred to it as KCBS on air for years, IDing it as KFRC only on the HD/RDS data and TOH ID (I heard 106.9 from Wyoming and had KFRC show up on the display when the HD locked)

I take back my own statement and had to go look at my own picture from Wyoming... KFRC 106.9 San Francisco is ID'd as KCBS on the HD Data too.

Seems unlikely 1070 will be anything other than a simulcast for years to come. After that, maybe value is extracted from the transmitter site?
The KNX transmitter is in Columbia Park in Torrance…are they leasing that land, or do they own that section of the park? Might not really be any value to be extracted from the transmitter site if the land would simply be integrated into the rest of the park should the KNX facility be dismantled.
 
A bunch of the repetition on call letters is because people don’t read what’s been written prior to commenting. So there’s erroneous information, wild-ass guesses and sheer fantasy to clean up.

Here are the facts:

KNX can keep the KNOU calls on FM and only mention them in the TOH ID. In fact, that’s what they are doing.

KCBS in San Francisco does this with their simulcast. The FM is KFRC.

RDS is not a legal ID, so it can display whatever they want it to, regardless of the legal calls.

A couple of asterisks:

The KCBS-FM calls are in use on 93.1 in L.A. CBS (which owned the stations at the time) wanted them there, so they weren’t an option for the SF calls. Also, there was concern about relinquishing the KFRC calls, for fear that they might still have some equity in the market.

While KNX could keep the KNOU calls on 97.1, someone at Audacy thought it was worth changing the calls from KAMP eight months ago, even though they could have easily kept them and buried them in the legal ID. So there’s some belief at corporate that calls still matter.

IF (BIG if) Audacy were to change or sell 1070, it would be smooth to already have the KNX calls in place on the FM. But that could (barring any rule changes) be done at the time. And that’s likely years away.

Changing the calls to KNX-FM would also give them the ability to control the image of the station, which could be muddled by not one, but two 70s/80s-era KNX-FM streaming stations.

Hence why I expect that KNOU will become KNX-FM in short order. There's no real reason why it can't, and it makes sense.

At times they do, and at times, they don't. It depends. They can call the station whatever they want, and it won't change the way PPM measures them, and it won't change the way the station is perceived by the audience. So in those ways, the letters have no relevance.

Yeah....

Well, I'm not really a pro, but in the vast majority of stations call signs really don't matter at all. In this case of 97.1 and at the present time with 1070 being KNX, it doesn't have any material impact whatsoever.

So I stand by my comment about these threads way over-indexing on callsign talk, but I suppose that is what you get on a "radio geek" forum.

Hagerty is right to point out that someone at Audacy thought it was worth the effort to change KAMP to KNOU just earlier this year. I think that move was probably more about flushing out the old brand and eliminating any chance for confusion than anything else.

While it doesn't really matter much, there is an element of congruity or harmony behind having a call sign that has some semblance to the on-air brand, whether that is to the media buyer looking through a spreadsheet of stations or a listener surfing around on Wikipedia. Does it really impact the success or failure of a radio brand? No. But if you can do it, why not?
 
Oof this thread exploded overnight in size since my visit yesterday. Anyways, I decided to go tune to 1070 late in the evening (I'm in Wyoming, so 97.1 is out of the question unless I find the online stream), and in fact they were only mentioning the 97.1 frequency. Normally, the KNX skywave signal isn't too good around here, but last night it was booming. it basically went something like "KNX it is 5:45, and now time for a traffic update"... and then they went on like that for about three minutes before "KNX on 97.1 FM" and then a feature sports story, or something before it faded below the noise floor. So sadly, KNX has abandoned it's AM branding, but at least that signal is still on the air as an option. By the way, thank you @david and @DavidEduardo, as well as @michael hagerty for keeping track of things while I was off the internet. And thanks @Joey1986 for the video of the switch over, as well as @Nathan Obral for his link to the switchover.

Also, while the story on KNX's site about the news says "simulcast", it's worth noting that "1070" or "AM" is no longer mentioned in the logo or website header. Whenever they update the graphics on the social networks, I bet 1070 will also be MIA.
I pulled in 1070 in Maricopa AZ this morning pre-dawn, and only heard them mention 97.1. I don't recall them saying 1070 at all.

My unprofessional take from the opposite coast and much further north is that calls matter when the station is heratige, is branded by the calls, and is being flipped to new branding and calls. With a station like KNX, it's not like another company can just start up a KNX-FM, because Audacy controls the calls. Where I have no professional take on this, I think it's a moot point, unless Audacy wanted to unload the AM frequency, thus needing to move the calls to the FM frequency.
 
How soon do you think iHeart will put KFI on FM?
It's still billing well and its clients are mostly local and are the kind that don't buy just on ratings alone... so even if they are down around 20th in 25-54, they look very good in 18+, 35-64 and 35+. This is not a format that will benefit much from being on FM at this point, and the owners discovered in San Diego that an added FM made no difference at all.
