I don't know to what extent, if any, this would affect skywave, but to my observation, WVON's day AND night groundwave signal is weaker than it was when they first moved to 1690 about 15 or so years ago.. I can't blame urban development, because the area surrounding their transmitter site has been densely populated and developed for decades. They're on the south side of Chicago diplexed with WGCI (1390), which also is weaker here day and night than it used to be. Perhaps the ground system is deteriorating. To this day I only have California and Colorado on 1690 - nothing else! I've looked for WVON for years, and have only heard traces of a third station under the strong pests from the west coast. Let alone Maryland or Georgia.
