The Breeze Blows Out of Town

I noticed that early this morning. I thought it was some kind of goof-up with the STL, but now the hourly ID says "WIOQ-FM Philadelphia, in simulcast on WISX Philadelphia".

Currently, The Breeze's web site looks like nothing has changed, and shows the names of the DJs that would be on the air during normal programming, but if you click on the online audio stream, it's also a simulcast of Q-102.

The hourly ID is the only mention of the simulcast on WISX. All the other IDs and liners just say Q-102. So what's going on? Why would they suddenly pull the plug on The Breeze, and not have anything to replace it with?

iHeart is doing the same thing with KUBE in Seattle. It's been simulcasting another station for almost 2 weeks.

So don't be surprised if this continues for a while. Meanwhile 104.5 is unchanged.

Also remember when 106.1 flipped from Smooth Jazz to Rhythmic AC "Philly's 106.1" they shadowcasted on 104.5 while dumping Sunny and eventually launching Rumba.

But still... SUPER odd that they just pull the plug and any revenue like this.

My only other thought is that iHeart IS moving their radio stations to new studios... so POSSIBLY just a simulcast for technical reasons during a move? But you'd think you'd let the listeners know if that was the case.

So remember all those possible formats people were throwing around for 104.5? They're all in the running for this station.

Country? Would Bobby Bones like to be in another major market? I think yes.

iHeart is also pushing an 80s format with Martha Quinn as host, but I think there's already too much 80s here.

Demographics must have been too old, which was the fear when soft AC was initially floated as a new format.

Now I wonder what will happen to all those Breezes that iHeart put on its HD subchannels in so many markets. Does WWYZ-HD2 in Hartford, for example, return to classic country?

It could definitely still serve a purpose on an HD2 or HD3. Plus, as far as we know, the remaining Breezes (San Francisco, Sacramento, Mansfield, OH) are doing pretty well ratings wise (but again, that doesn't necessarily translate to $$)

Does WXTU bill enough to go after a piece of that pie and split it further? I can understand wanting to clear Bobby Bones in a major market, but is that enough for iHeart to just take a piece of XTU's revenue?

As for 80s/Classic hits... maybe, but again, Ben FM and WOGL are battling that space at the moment, do you need a 3rd entrant?

Wild card thought... Classic Rock? Go after WMMR and WMGK's monster male numbers and attempt to peel off a slice of that? 106.1 The Brew? Rock 106.1? Other than the scant few 90s tracks Alt 104.5 plays, it shouldn't dig into their audience that much.

I would think a different type of country stations would be the best option. Can't recall of any time in the last 30 years anyone has tried to take WXTU's listeners.

I really hope for something new to the market...only to see how fast it is flipped again! the Philly market is not progressive enough for new formats.

I think "80s plus," classic rock, rock, country, news/talk, Hot AC and a Spanish language format of some kind are all possibilities.

I am surprised The Breeze is being tossed to the curb.

It will be interesting to see if the move at 106.1 (whatever it turns out to be) changes Audacy's strategy with 96.5 at all.

Part of the country pie is likely worth more than 100% of soft AC. Plus the value to the iHeart national country platform.

iHeart doesn't do "different." They will do what they do everywhere, which is Bobby Bones in the morning, and current hits all day.

The fact that they already fired Valerie Knight tells me they have a syndicated morning show ready to go.
