Goodbye 103.9 Jack FM?

Radio Insight is reporting that a likely format change to 103.9 WJKR "Jack FM" could be coming soon.

If NABCO goes Country with 103.9 would they have any local staff? As far back as I can remember 103.9 it has never had any local personalities. When it was Ted FM it ran a automated format like they have been doing with Jack FM. When it was "News Radio 103.9 WMNI" it ran syndicated programming.

I can't see a fully automated jock=less country format doing well on 103.9 against powerhouse 92.3 WCOL across the river.

If Jack or the format departs, I'll be quite unhappy. It's a much better music selection than Rewind and The Bus. Plus, the new HD installation sounds amazing.

Country is the only way I can see them going as WCOL is pulling some big numbers with zero competition. I personally prefer WCLT but the signal isn't good enough for it to be a regular in and around the city.

My understanding is there will be on air talent but to what degree not sure yet.

Country Aircheck reports John Boy Crenshaw returns:

WJKR/Columbus Goes Country: North American Broadcasting Adult Hits WJKR/Columbus, OH flipped to Country at 11am CT as "Country 103.9." The move comes four months after veteran Country programmer John Crenshaw took over as OM for the cluster, which is now in a format battle with crosstown iHeartMedia WCOL. Crenshaw programmed 'COL from Sept. 2001 until Dec. 2012.

Any idea how WJKR was doing (ratings and billing) with adult hits? I checked the Columbus 12+ numbers but the station isn't listed. I guess they were either using an alternative rating service or flying by the seat of their pants when it came to attracting advertising.

Crenshaw did a very good job, I thought, during the brief time he was at the helm of Nash FM 94.5 in Grand Rapids. He is also a good on-air talent.

After he left, his successor (who remains employed for reasons that defy me) ran the station into the ground, including a horribly executed frequency change.

Sadly, NABCO has not subscribed to the book for a long time so no idea how their 3 stations (including the former Jack FM) are doing in Columbus.

They should switch Jack to 99.7 with a Jack-is-Back promotion. With a good signal Jack would outperform the tired old Blitz, including demo-wise, just as it does in numerous PPM markets. I agree with stevenNOLA that Jack's music puts Rewind and the broken-down Bus to shame. Not holding my breath though -- even though I have great respect for Crenshaw -- as this is Columbus.
