98.5 DX in Greenville

Today’s FM DX was KVOO-FM from Tulsa, OK, blasting country music in at I-385 exit 34-35 (between Mauldin and Greenville), obliterating the signal from Summit’s X-98.5, despite it being ~10 miles away. I first caught this station on I-385 in Fountain Inn, but it came and went. Past MM 35, I think the W253BG signal actually became strong enough to fend off interference because it was largely clear past the 85/385 exit. It did take another mile or so for the X-98.5 RDS to kick back in, so there were still some issues going on.

This is one of the farthest stations I’ve gotten in the car; and the farthest I’ve gotten that locked in to HD and completely blew out a nearby signal (this is normally a strong area for the W253BG signal with no issue).

Video (X-98.5 is obviously the one playing AJR’s “Bang!”):

That's really cool. I picked up KVOO one night several years ago when I lived in Watauga County, NC. I was trying to listen to WTFM from the Tri-Cities, which normally came in well where I lived. I knew something was off when I heard Sammy Kershaw on there!

I was just shocked at how it even locked in HD. 98.5 is a translator but runs the full 250 watts at a high tower less than 10 miles away. It’s generally a clear frequency except for WSB-FM but you have to be pretty far west for them to interfere, even during tropo. For KVOO to overpower THAT is what shocked me and the way both signals cut in and out sharply and neither had static.

My DX on 98.5 from this area (Gaffney SC) I remember a few years ago, was KQKQ (from Omaha NE) before X98.5 was on the air.

And during tropo the frequency was fighting it out with WSB 98.5 from Atlanta as well as the Lexington SC station WOMG, and rarely, WTFM

Often during tropo Hot 107.9 from Atlanta interferes with Mix 107.9 from Charlotte in Greenville and parts of Spartanburg counties, despite WLNK being closer. But allegedly the Atlanta 107.9 has an overpowered signal and 107.9 has a slight null to the west due to the placement of their antenna on the WBTV tower. But ironically now both 107.9 signals are owned by Radio One.
