San Diego's All-Time Greatest Radio Personality

Who would be your pick, and why?

For me, it's Ernie Myers, the longtime morning man at KOGO in the '70s, and KSDO in the '80s and into the '90s. The true greats always make it sound easy, and Myers didn't just have a knack for warmth and light banter. Like Arthur Godfrey, he was just somehow compelling even when he wasn't talking *about* much of anything. I can't think of many local talents who could have moved from 20-odd years of traditional DJ work into being the on-air ringmaster of an all-news station, but Myers sure pulled it off.

I don't know of any Ernie Myers airchecks, and I never had the foresight to record him myself, so I'm only going by memory. But unquestionably he was one of our giants.

Steve West, who helped launch, and was with 91X for decades, and then moved his Sunday morning retro Alternative show over to 94.9. He was not there for very long, finally succumbing to his longtime battle with prostate cancer. Which he was very open about, raising money for research on air, and putting out a lot of public awareness.

He was San Diego's top Alternative personality, taken from us too soon.

Do you remember his PSA Airlines TV Commercials?

Since KOGO covers Los Angeles as well as SD, Ernie had a following up here as well...my parents listened to him frequently!

I suspect we have posters of all ages here, plus "radio nerds" (like myself) who like to listen to out of market stations just out of curiosity or because loved ones live there. So, for what it's worth, I loved when Art Good was on smooth jazz station KIFM. I'm not sure if he was ever local or just syndicated (he of JAZZTRAX). I also listened to the B Morning Zoo on B-100 ("Rich Brothers?").

I started doing radio in 2014, and Jojo definitely inspired and influenced me! I assume that he probably didn’t stay at Q106 forever (I’m sorry, I don’t know the history), but the time he spent there was special.
It's hard to think of a jock who worked in more markets than JoJo. And he never stayed anywhere too long, unfortunately.

Shot gun tom Kelly! Thats a no brainer.
He's way up there for me too. His longevity alone would make him a contender, apart from his inexhaustible good cheer. I would put Rod Page up near the top as well, but for me Ernie Myers wears the crown.

I agree with Shotgun Tom Kelly as a solid vote here, yet any roster like this should also make mention of Jeff & Jer.

A lot of the names mentioned so far go pretty far back in time. To give a nod to a current personality, although their show has been on the air 32 years now, that right there says something! Of course I'm talking about the DSC, specifically Dave Rickards and Cookie "Chainsaw" Randolph. My vote for "current" all time greatest personality. .
