107.9 Sacramento

Interesting read on Lance’s Domain Insight, today. This points to a hunch of mine a long time ago, but is there room? Will they be in it to win it? I think iHeart is better in the format than Audacy and has more Star power.

Oh darn, it's behind a pay wall. I take it that you are referring to Hot AC. I know iHeart has a successful "Star" in SF and San Diego.

Without giving too much away, I'm not optimistic there is for a number of reasons.
When I said iHeart is better than Audacy, I meant CHR. The End is complacent and KZZO’s music is CHR in a Hot AC body. IHeart needs a younger format more than a Classic Hits station. It should give KCCL continued own the format.

I’m respecting Lance’s paywall by not giving out the new name registration. You can subscribe, it’s only 5 bucks.

The dial in Sacramento is full. Everything is done. You don't waste a signal like that on a niche format. CHR is struggling right now but it could be an interesting time to get in when the competitors aren't dominant. I just don't know that the large groups are really interested in putting on young stations in 2022. They mostly seem to be sticking with 35+ formats when they launch something new.

That leaves 35-54 which means death to radio down the road.

Here's a quote from an exec with Hubbard Broadcasting today in RadioInk:

Instead of keeping that second AC or third rock station try something that appeals to younger people. And according to the Jacobs info it’s not Alternative. They’re already gone to satellite. Think differently. Take chances. Our industry predominately does formats that appeal to boomers, programmed by boomers with boomer talent. I like boomers. I am one. I’m out of demo. The youngest boomer is 58. Get people, consultants, researchers and formats that appeal to listeners who are 25-34, if not 18-24.

True, but I'm not sure that running a CHR in a market where the heritage CHR is middle of the pack and it's Hot AC competitor is equally as established. I don't see iHeart disrupting things in the market with another CHR, regardless of the power behind it.

Will there be a new format on 107.9 tomorrow? My money is still on 107.9 The Bull. AC, CHR, plus another CHR is tied with another Country station along with all the other country stations. I like the positions in that article in Radio Ink. Go young and may the best radio competitor win. Good luck to all the companies competing here in the capitol city. This is a great radio marketplace come on all you stations lets make it a shinning example to all of America. Tomorrow is a new day should be very interesting for us all. Although I'd like to see Classic Hits my bet still stands. Go Sacramento Radio!!!!

Where I think they've screwed up is by doing just the voice drops the past few days. The one-day music things would keep some people tuned in long enough to hear that they were playing the same song over and over. The Mother's Day thing gave them a few songs for a bit longer tune-in. But very few people are going to spend any time waiting to hear what the voice says every ten seconds, and very few people are going to come back day after day to hear it again.

This would have been a good point to start playing music, even---and maybe especially---if it's not music from the new format. Another diversion to keep competition guessing.

If the new station is "Star 107.9", it's possible that iHeart thought "KSTE" was as close to "Star" as any other available calls and just decided to go with KSTE-FM. They'd bury the calls in the legal ID anyway.

This extended stunting with random drops is going too far and ruining a potentially exciting launch. It’s time to s@@t or get off the pot. Of course, if it becomes right wing talk or country I’ll tune out when I visit up there.

Whgen i took a station from top 40 to oldies in 2004, i got the boss to let me play whatever i wanted from friday morning to tuesday launch day.

I did spanish for a day. i did tv and game show theme songs for a day. I did soft AC music for a day. and for 2 days, i played the most christmasy music i could find.
