107.9 Sacramento

When iHM (then Clear Channel) launched 93.1 back in 2009 they did only 4 or 5 format-of-the-day stunts before the classic hits rollout. It was alternative rock, Armstrong & Getty best of, soft rock, and Top 40, IIRC. That seemed like an appropriate length of stunting. The first day threw everyone off since KWOD had recently flipped, leaving the market with no alternative rocker.

I really thought they would launch the new 107.9 format last Friday.

Sports talk would seem to be a small pie - you've already got ESPN and CBS Sports Radio/local covered on the two existing ones with less than a two share combined.
This is not my wheelhouse, but it seems to me that Spanish/Regional Mexican AC/CHR is underrepresented in Sac? Several stations but not even close to a five share combined (as opposed, say, to San Jose with almost a ten share combined). My bias would be for a 'Spanglish' CHR hybrid but, again, I'm no expert in this area... just looking for the market holes...

The Spanish language pie is split 6 ways in Sacramento with the best signal doing Bilingual CHR.

I’m guessing CHR or Hot AC. Star 106.5 was a casualty due to the End’s 107.9 sign off and Hot 103.5 made way for bi-lingual Fuego.

CHR is due for a comeback and the numbers we see listed 6+ are not the sellable numbers which are segments of 18-54. If you look at 6+, KFBK beats NPR, but 25-54, it’s the other way around.

And Sacramento is a one-team city for big league sports, and that team (Kings, NBA) is a perennial non-contender. The university in town (Sacramento State) doesn't play at the top level. That really doesn't leave much for an all-sports station to hang its hat on.

My favorite is the guy getting thrown out by his girlfriend after she finds his eye lash extensions that he forgot to put away into his own make up kit because he was passing gas in bed while asking alexa how old tom cruise is while also wondering how tall Robert Downey Jr. is. Will this end at midnight?

Lol lol lol The voices are the same with a few new ones. If you go to the talk back mic button at the I heart radio app and record a comment you might hear yourself on the radio at 107.9. This actually is a very interesting stunt although now this may go on for another week.

This seems like a 'natural' tease to a talk format... I vote that the 'real' format starts on the traditional Thursday start.
As someone who has been logging format changes since the mid 90s, there is no such thing as a "traditional" Thursday start for new formats.

The two times that if anything have had the most launches are Monday at 12am and Friday at 5pm. But we are also now less than two weeks away from what traditionally has the second most format launches in Memorial Day weekend (trailing only December 26).

Here's Lance's take on the latest round of stunting:

Update 5/16: After six days of the smart speaker listening back part of the pre-launch stunt, iHeartMedia’s 107.9 KSTE-FM Sacramento has moved on to another new phase.

KSTE-FM is now promoting the recently launched “Talkback” feature on the iHeartRadio app featuring listeners leaving messages and song requests. Clips heard include people making suggestions for the new format, a guy giving Sacramento history lessons, and statements about current events.

And the Friday at 5pm launch is an old-school theory that you flip the station after the competition has gone home for the weekend. In theory the competition can't get new imaging/promotions on the air effectively because the audience is also gone [greatly diminished] for the weekend. At least the two GMs I worked for during Friday 5pm launches both had that theory.

Are two week long stunting periods normal radio practice? This really has to be wearing thin for a lot of anxious listeners. But they are getting the message out for sure. The Sacramento history guy is doing a great job.

First, I don't think any "radio listeners" are anxious. We have so many choices that the best a new station or format or stream can do is increase awareness.

It will happen when it happens. In today's environment it makes little difference how it is done; the old "play the same song over and over for several days" type of launch attracts no attention since most people do not manually scan the dial any more.

There is no "Normal Practice" as nobody has proven that any particular stunt procedure is more effective than others.
