Preparing for the Ellen-calypse

Since Ellen is very close to ending her run (the final episode airs on May 26), I thought this would be a good time to bump up this thread. Apparently there will be repeats through the summer, which doesn't surprise me. But I remember after the Oprah-calypse, a lot of affiliates stopped airing the show after the final episode aired in may, and if it was on at 4pm, it would be replaced with a newscast. I think it's still too early to determine what will go in her place. I stated my thoughts about WCVB and WMUR in my original post, but WJAR in Providence currently has Kelly Clarkson at 3pm and then Ellen at 4pm, and I actually could see them starting a 4pm newscast, since competitor WPRI has one.

KCCI 8 in Des Moines has been airing Kelly Clarkson at 3pm since December 2021 as it replaced Dr. Oz. Kelly Clarkson previously aired at 12:35am where Dr. Oz moved to then replaced with the good dish.
Ellen DeGeneres has been airing at 4pm since I believe September 2014 I think when WHO 13 started to air a 4pm newscast. Instead of moving Ellen up an hour or a different time they stayed at the same time but moved to KCCI 8.

As mentioned, Yakima/Tri-Cities moves at a glacial pace. I expect NBC 'Right Now' to not have news at 4 'right now.' Rather, Ellen reruns through August/early September, then some new syndicated talk show.
KING 5 News at 3PM isn't a crazy idea, on the other hand.

I enjoyed her show until the allegations came out with her producers. I've refused to watch ever since. That, and the whole COVID era anyways. Her show has been tainted by the drama.

Here are the Michigan stations carrying Ellen and some possible post-Ellen programming:
Alpena - WBKB 11 (CBS) - 4pm (move Dr. Phil from 5pm to 4pm, add 5pm newscast)
Detroit - WDIV 4 (NBC) - 3pm (new syndicated talk show or move Inside Edition to 3 or 3:30, which would allow its existing 4pm newscast to run a full hour)
Flint/Saginaw/Bay City - WEYI 25 (NBC) - 4pm (new syndicated talk show)
Grand Rapids - WOOD 8 (NBC) - 4pm (add 4pm newscast; surprisingly only WXMI has news at 4pm)
Lansing - WLAJ 53 (ABC) - 4pm (move Dr. Phil from sister station WLNS; WLNS adds 4pm newscast)
Marquette - WLUC 6 (NBC) - 4pm (new syndicated talk show)
Traverse City/Cadillac - WWTV 9 (CBS) - 3pm (new syndicated talk show)

Here's my perspective on this...

Alpena? I don't see that one happening. Its way too small of a market for one plus WBKB doesn't have that many people anyway to begin with to tackle an extra workload for a new newscast.
Detroit? Yes, I do see that happening.
Flint? More likely because WEYI is just down on its lumps. I don't think 4pm news will ever come to them, unfortunately.
Grand Rapids? Yeah, I'm surprised too. I agree with this one as well.
Lansing? I'm mixed because while I don't see it happening, WILX has done one before at 4:00 p.m. so we'll see.
Marquette? Yeah. Too small for that market to add more news. That's a forgone conclusion.
Traverse City/Cadillac? This one would be interesting for me. They either do that OR will move their local show The Four to 3pm and give it a new name which will allow them to add 4pm news of their own, under a branded newscast name obviously.

Maybe WJAR starts the 4pm news as soon as Ellen airs her last episode.

I think reruns are airing after the 26th for a while, probably through sometime in September. WCCB still lists her at 4. This is different from when Oprah retired. Her show went off the air completely after her last day.

I kinda hope WTVF-5 in Nashville flexes Let's Make A Deal to 9AM and puts Kelly at 3PM where Ellen currently is, but we're probably gonna get "NewsChannel 5 at 3".

If that were to happen, a half-hour or an hour-long, or would Inside Edition move to 3:30pm to make NC5 at 4pm an hour-long?

Inside Edition would go to 2:00 and The List would move over from 5.2 to 5.1 at 2:30

I'm kinda surprised that WTVF doesn't air Right This Minute since Scripps owns the show and that the Nexstar TV station airs RTM in the late-night hours in Nashville just seems odd to me.

TV Passport still shows at 3pm new Expiside of Ellen KMBC June 6th.

Those will be repeats. The final new episode is this Thursday.

One station Is adding a Newscast WMUR but TV Passport still shows Ellen new not Newscast yet so we don't know what stations that already have a Newscast after Ellen going to do temporary.

The bottom has fallen out of daytime talk shows. Kelly and Drew are struggling in most markets. Ellen is up very slightly, mainly because it's the last season. Most stations are looking at other options, anything but talk shows. Especially considering how much syndication charges for those shows.
